In these leadenly gray days, everything from Black Dice to Fennesz is being played on the campus radio and it's easy to lose sight of what was truly revolutionary. And yet, even compared to the most recent Merzbow releases, Pulse Demon will still slaughter innocent orphans in a fraction of a second.

Forget songs; this is about texture. Pulse Demon's eight tracks range from the three-and-a-half minute `Woodpecker #2' to the near half-hour of `Worms Plastic Earthbound.' Grating, high-pitched frequencies and low-cycle rumblings abound ... Dive in, or run screaming.

Merzbow's second American release offers more of the deafening white noise that is his trademark, mastered for maximum loudness. Not for the faint of heart, but ideally suited for the hard of hearing.

I've heard better noises to be honest. Like this one time I was walking on the sidewalk and I heard my favorite noise...THE ICE CREAM TRUCK! It was playing pop goes the weasel in an adorable music box fashion. So I waved the truck down and a jolly old gentleman in an apron and butchers cap opened the window and said
"What can I get for you kiddo?"
and I said
"I would like a Sonic the Hedgehog Ice Cream with Gumball Eyes...but I don't have any money."

There's really something to it, and I think I understand people who are fans of the genre. Nevertheless, Pulse Demon remains an extremely difficult to digest record that leaves your head splitting.
