Vulnerable is Tricky's most accessible album since Maxinquaye, but it has neither that album's shock of the new nor its enduring appeal.
The year-round sunshine seems to have induced creative lethargy, sapping the adventure that elevated his last album.
Vulnerable has a cheap sound and a cut and paste feel from beginning to end and is hard to shake.
To be quite honest, despite it being perhaps the most obvious example of an artist conforming to contemporary trends, "Blowback" was a definite improvement, because it rescued Tricky from his biggest enemy by 2001 - himself. He had painted himself into such a corner by 1998 that it seemed like he was actively trying to push away his listeners, unlike on "Maxinquaye" where he invited them into his fucked-up head.

One of the most awkward, unpleasing trip hop albums I've ever heard. It's actually impressive how much of an artistic drop this is from 6-7 years ago when Maxinquaye came out. Unlike Portishead and Massive Attack, who both made innovative and forward-thinking albums even after they made their magnum opus, Tricky spiraled into a weird blend of acoustic/electronic trip hop that really wasn't pleasant, to say the least.
