The rock and roll roots on Slogan Machine tap into punk rock roots while the very traditional hardcore vocals sort of overpower the musicality. Similar things happen sometimes on fiddlehead, FUCKED UP, and Candy type records. A little too hard for seemingly no reason. There is a stripped back nature to this that feels really DIY.
Some enjoyable hardcore here from Gumm. “Yeaaah” is the cry at the very beginning of ‘Frontier’ and my ears instantly prick up in agreement. I’m hearing my youth and my Uni days as part of the UK Hardcore scene. I’m hearing Snapcase, Veil, Strife, Ten Yard Fight, Chain of Strength and Integrity. This band is sick. The first show my band Vital Part ever played was with Gumm opening for Chamber. This is my first real time listening to their stuff, however. I love how they have some melodic hardcore sounds mixed underneath a harder and more classic hardcore sound. This isn't heavy hardcore at all, and that's why I'm impressed it grabbed me so much.
