DARK TRANQUILLITY are Swedish thrash — fast tempos, buzzsaw riffs, harsh vocals, catchy songs, and that hint of classic-metal melody. And "Character" is a sterling example of all that's good about the genre.
A bit of bias here again as this is another record that was really formulative when I was growing up. That said I think it really is that good in general though. Produced amazingly well, the riffs are fast and dialed in, the vocals are some of the best in their discography, the keys do a lot for atmosphere. I adore this record, the melodies and emotion it envokes I still feel today.
Even though Character feels more focused and tight than Damage Done, I can't help but think it's missing something. The album is good, and it has some memorable moments, but this one just didn't hit like Damage Done did. I don't really know where to fault the album, I just feel like they missed the mark slightly, at least compared to the previous record. I'll still enjoy listening to this, but I had higher hopes for Character.
Really nice Melodeath. Great vocals combined with strong melodious passages and powerful instrumentation throughout. Maybe gets a tad repetitive, but otherwise fire.
