I will never understand the hate that this particular albums gets. Paradise Lost's ventures into Darkwave from One Second are taken to extreme on Host and it's one of the catchiest, most competently made albums within said genre. It's definitely similar to 90s Depeche Mode stuff but it's not a bad thing at all, as Depeche Mode themselves are a fantastic band, and the guys from Paradise Lost are still clearly themselves. one of their absolute best albums.
Host exists only because Macintosh was listening a lot of Depeche Mode at that time and wanted to experiment with synths. Half of the band didn't recognise themselves in the new sound for Holmes at the end admitting it should have been a side project.
The band was in a dark place at that time and you can feel it in their sound.Everything related to metal sounding disappeared to make sure it goes closer to Depeche Mode.

I remember thinking this wasn't too bad on first listen, but given the fact that I rated it 2.5/5 I must've changed my mind throughout the album.
I must've been smoking something when I rated this album, cause my initial thoughts were completely right. This is a great album, I love the electronic elements - and I don't really mind the departure from their gothic metal sound.
