Some songs don't stand out as much and wouldn't really belong on an "essentials" mix or anything. But that's not the point. The point is the steel marches on, and you can't stop it.

For those who like their metal raw and ripping, stripped back with zero pretense, this is the record for you.

Distorted Sound

With Hellish Expectations, Athenar has hit blackened gold once again and proven that nobody is doing straight ahead speed metal delivered with a punk attitude and an essential raw nature quite as well as MIDNIGHT at the moment.

While Midnightโ€™s output is nothing more than a stagnant pond brimming with slime and algae, itโ€™s the buzzing flies circling above it that swirl the waters just enough to keep me coming back again and again.

Adding this to the “would probably go harder live” pile.

This actually kinda slaps. Production is alright, the vocals sound pleasant, and the riffs go quite hard sometimes.

It is way too short to have any kind of effect on me, though. I don’t know if I’ll ever find myself returning to this album, but it was fun to listen to.

Well, obviously Midnight's music is really one-dimensional and we've surely heard it all before. There're just minor differences between their albums imo which doesn't mean to say Midnight is bad. Hellish Expectations really delivers and offers a variety of punishing riffs. It's not a record to make a lasting impact (probably unlike only their debut) but it's fun.

Best: Expect Total Hell, Dungeon Lust
