NME
It may have taken six years, but ‘Dopamine’ sounds like the (damn) album Normani was meant to make all long.
80
Rolling Stone

The road to the R&B singer’s highly anticipated debut wasn’t easy, but the end result proves the wait was worth it.

80
Clash
It’s a debut that hits the programmed sweet spot, conversant with contemporary trends and greater RnB and soul traditions. It’s the sound of Normani calibrating her affinity for homage whilst subtly establishing her own presence as new star to bank on.
80
Dork
Normani is an artist brimming with confidence, knowing what she wants and going all out to get it.
74
Pitchfork
The pop singer’s long-awaited debut is also a comeback and reintroduction. With her plush voice and slick production, she plays it cool and also plays it safe.

Beats Per Minute
What we have here is a record by a grown woman ready to carry the show on her back, and showing every component needed to eventually achieve a truly classic record. Normani stays one to watch, and for now her fans have some very solid material to enjoy until she decides to come back.

AllMusic

While nothing quite matches the baddie intensity of "Big Boy," Dopamine works nicely, conjuring a vibe of sultry, post-club afterglow.

70
Slant Magazine
The singer’s debut reinforces the notion that there is indeed value in taking one’s time.
60
The Line of Best Fit
Does the record deliver after all these years, then? Occasionally, but not satisfactorily when playing with the tempting what-ifs.
60
The Guardian
The ex-Fifth Harmony member was tipped for huge success until creative differences and personal strife set her back, but she has confidently regained her footing by leaning into R&B.
60
The Independent
Sultry and smouldering, it’s the perfect mood-setter for date night – but after such a long wait, you might hope for a bigger dopamine hit.

There are tracks where it make you wanna shake some ass but others make you want to fall asleep on a pair of ASS.

Worth the wait? No, overall pretty boring.

I feel bad for the score that I gave this, considering her struggled to put out her debut in the first place, but it’s just not worth the squeeze.

Normani’s debut album - one in the making for “Six” years now - is a Pop Rap album that’s not going to stand out amongst its peers, no matter how eye catching the album cover is. It’s full of bland tracks, recycled beats, empty features, and weird noises for the sake of weird noises.

I’m not saying that ... read more

In 2019, after a few solo songs, Normani released "Motivation", a track that would put the spotlight on the solo career of the former member of the group Firth Harmony, who, at that time, delivering great quality R&B, was showing high potential to become a big name in pop/R&B.

With the hype she was getting, it was predictable that she would soon release a full-length album and, in fact, she hinted at it, since a year earlier she had posted a tweet saying that she had already ... read more

Well…this score is lowkey inflated because I love Wild Side, and without it, this album would be pretty terrible. I get that it’s supposed to be sensual, but it needed more energy. It’s so melatonin-like. All of the singles minus Wild Side are just okay and the rest of the album is even worse. All Yours was almost good but I’m not a fan of the chorus, and Distance is a good track. I don’t judge people’s music taste but there’s definitely better r&b ... read more

Best Song: 1:59/All Yours
Favourite Song: 1:59/Tantrums

A solid debut that took way too long to come out. The songs are good! They really are. However, for an album released in 2024 you can tell these songs were written, produced and recorded years ago. Most of the album sounds like it was meant to be (and should've been) released in 2022 so by the time it reaches our ears it does sound incredibly dated. Still, there are some gems such as the collab with Gunna, a song like 1:59 is where ... read more
