While Violent Waves is just as suitable for a cold winter’s day as its younger brother Juturna, there are also a few songs that might be a nice soundtrack to the first thaw of the year.
Violent Waves is such a unique Circa album. With many of these songs originating as B-sides or singles then coming together as one on this record gives the listen a bit of a disconnected feel. Each member of the band pushing their own respective envelopes. Telling deeper more complex stories, venturing further into the chasms of the psyche, and finding rich soil to land on.
Compared to their prior releases this definitely takes a bit of a different approach. With a lot of the tracklist coming from different times it makes sense that there isn't one consistent sound across everything, however as a whole this is definitely more alt rock than the post hardcore that they made a name for themselves with. Treading water through the waves. Some really good stuff here (The Lottery is maybe top 5 Circa track) but unfortunately it doesn't quite measure up to all the material before this. Still a very solid record. 4 down 3 to go, nothing you love lasts too long
