Expressing myself is something I've always struggled with a lot. No matter what it is, I always develop doubts. What if nobody shows any interest? What if I'm judged at my core for expressing myself? What if it comes to bite me back soon? I wish I had the confidence to consistently share my passions with the world, but as it stands, I'm extremely insecure.
What does that have to do with Loveless, exactly? Well, this album has to be one of the best examples of creative expression ... read more
Despite hearing Kids a lot growing up, MGMT wasn't a band I was aware of until more recently. I'm so glad I discovered them though, as they're one of the most fun and entrancing synthpop artists I've heard. Little Dark Age in particular is fantastic and feels like both a tribute and parody of 80s New Wave. The downtuned synths give each of the songs a brooding soundscape and dark mood, even during more upbeat tracks such as the opener. I especially love the basswork, and the ... read more
Do they sound a lot like the Smashing Pumpkins? Yes. But honestly, does that matter? Not really. I mean, the Smashing Pumpkins also wore their influences proudly; Billy Corgan literally said Gish was him trying to rip off My Bloody Valentine. (he even copied their recording process of playing most of the guitar and bass parts!) Don't get me wrong, there are some moments here and there which are a wee bit on the nose, such as Waste It On having a similar bass melody to Smashing ... read more
Dropkick Murphys are the musical equivalent of that one dope who brags about having Irish ancestry and makes it their entire personality. I do really enjoy hearing Celtic influence within music, for the record. There are plenty of great examples of bands from Ireland who implement Celtic influence into their sound seamlessly, such as The Cranberries or Thin Lizzy. There are even bands outside of Ireland I would say succeed at that, including other Celtic Punk leaning groups such as The ... read more
Everyone Else Is Doing MTV Unplugged, So Why Can’t The Cranberries? This is one of my favourite MTV Unplugged sets, personally. This was when Dolores O’Riordan really started to perfect her vocal style, and while I found the imperfections such as her voice cracking charming in those first two records, she sounded more beautiful here than ever before. The Cranberries’ songs translated wonderfully stripped down, and paired with a string ensemble gave these songs a ... read more
I would like to formally apologise to Rush. I previously viewed them as pretentious, showy, and irritating. I found Neil Peart's philosophical lyrics corny and surface level, Geddy Lee's high pitched vocal style grating, and even the instrumentals to be obnoxiously flashy. Now, I will fully admit that these qualities are all still true. But what's also true is that this album is super cool regardless. Sometimes the flaws of something, no matter how glaring they may be, feel ... read more
