I’m revisiting my favorite Taylor albums to see if they hold up, as it’s been nearly 2 years since I did my original discography dive with her, and I would say this does. It is inconsistent, but it isn’t hard to see why this album blew up in the way it did. Soaring choruses and lively production are the cornerstone of this album, and there are some incredible bridges too, most notably on Out Of The Woods.

This was an ethereal experience. The atmosphere is cold, lonely, and melancholic, but not in the typical “you are all alone” way, instead it creates a feeling of going through immense struggles while the world continues moving. Brighton Beach is the best example of this, the city noises accompanied by the sorrowful guitar strumming is extremely moving, and emulates depression better than any song I have ever heard.
