un clásico

Very solid for a debut EP. I can hear all their SM predecessors in this album, especially Red Velvet (Flutter, Blue Moon). This album reassures me that the SM brand is in good hands. The title track Focus expands an uncommon K-pop genre in a very tasteful way. While solid, it isn’t particularly innovative and feels very safe and close to their SM predecessors, and by comparison, Savage by aespa took a much bolder approach.

It’s a pretty cute and easy-to-listen-to album. Nothing life-changing or groundbreaking, but this soft R&B-pop, Ariana-adjacent, will always be one of my favorite genres, and she executes it like no one else in the industry right now. It’s probably her most interesting work vocally, with tracks like Bad Enough.
