At a time when most rappers wanted to be seen as gangstas, MF DOOM always strived for something higher. If rap were a Saturday Morning Cartoon, anyone else at the time was a one-off, two-bit pissant villain meant to be plucked off in 20 minutes and dispatched permanently by the hero. DOOM, fittingly, was more of the Doctor Doom variety - He was smarter, more arrogant, more composed, more calculated; better and more frightening than anyone before him. And like any good supervillain, he made his ... read more
You know, I can really appreciate when a song doesn't have to try super hard to hit you emotionally. Instrumentally, this song doesn't have penetrating drones, piercing stabs, or screaming vocals, it just grabs you immediately with tear-inducing lyrics and soft, wistful chords. And yet, it has all the emotional resonance of a Radiohead or Joy Division track. The emotion conveyed by this song is so, so much more than plaintive sadness, it's a deep sense of nostalgia, injustice, and longing. I ... read more
A very competent, moody, depressive gothic-rock record, and it's still my least favorite thing the band has put out sans Love of Life, the Amnesiac as it were to this album's Kid A. This time around, Gira and crew decide they want to be Echo and the Bunnymen. What? What kind of sonic direction is this? Why is the last song some kind of medieval folk ballad about suicide or death or whatever Swans songs are normally about? Where's Blind? Whatever good this album does is negated by the fact that ... read more
Cure for unhappiness:
- Acknowledge presence of bad thoughts
- Get high
- Turn on Take As Needed For Pain by Eyehategod
- Immediately feel vindication in your ugly thoughts and transform self-pity into malice
- Feel better almost instantly
Another Green World might be my favorite album of all time, but if you asked me to pick the BEST album of all time, 98.12.28 would certainly make a compelling case. Forget every song being good, every song here is a tear-inducing masterpiece that makes you comprehend the simple yet staggering awe of life itself. It's a celebration of life's joys straight from someone whose joys were running on short supply. At 20 years old, I can't even begin to process having the courage to be so childishly in ... read more
Bowie and Eno. Kid Cudi and Kanye West. As tacky as artistic crossovers can be, music occasionally blesses us with that odd moment when two artists with totally distinct visions find enough in common to come together and create a singular work that presents both artists at running at their peak while also perfectly reflecting the other. You'd think that Boris's ominous droning din coupled with Merzbow's synthesized terrorism would create a foul, confused work of music, but you'd be wrong. What ... read more
Who says they don't make good trance in the year of our lord two-thousand twenty?
I'm not going to give this album an extremely negative score because I'm guessing that's exactly what Mr. Akita wants me to do.
The only good thing to come out of 2020.
Epic, dark, atmospheric, unforgiving, and, in the "right" mood, utterly devastating. I can't tell if the fact that two quirky, interesting, disturbed guys could find each other in some depressing penis location like small town Connecticut, release such a monolithic, complex, and definitive work of art, and manage to find an audience is a testament to the enduring strength of the spirit of rock and roll or the triumph of the independent artist. More likely, it's a sign that however ... read more
Another Green World is the best album I've ever listened to. Not only is it extremely varied in terms of moods and sonic structure, but each track succeeds perfectly at capturing its intended mood. This isn't a piece of music meant to be consumed once and forgotten about, but one to be treasured and appreciated for your limited but precious years.
Oh boy, a new Kid Cudi release? Does that mean it's time for everyone to like it until F*ntano inevitably gives it a 4?
Well, you were half right, Skynyrd. Alabama actually DID vote for Richard Nixon in the election of 1972. I'm going to guess you're referring to election of 1968, where the state voted for independent candidate George Wallace. Let's run down some fast facts about him really quick:
- Was a vehement, virulent bigot who suggested shooting looters dead where they stand, personally stood in front of the University of Alabama to prevent black people from entering, and approved the use of police ... read more
Honestly, Kanye, just stop making music. If you're true to your word and can't make music while medicated, then this single should serve as proof that it isn't worth it. Get help.
One of the better YFM singles, if only for the fact that it's one the few that isn't vaguely trying to offend some minority group.
