For the uninitiated, Owen Kufta is a member of avant garde outlet Ploon and is a frequent collaborator with one of my favorite bands, Blasphemous Basement. In what feels like Beefheart reincarnate, Pulgas makes a rock in opposition record with modern sensibilities. This record pulls from places no RIO record should, which somehow makes it feel like a true successor to a genre that has been dormant for far too long. With incredible musicianship, excellent humor, and hooks to stick the landing, The Book of Pulgas is one of the best avant-garde releases I've heard in awhile.
