Vince Staples pulls off a rap-rock album in the most correct way, by taking key aspects of one genre and changing them to match the other. The lyricism on this album is political (a similarity of both genres) but is more direct rather than understated, similar to the lyricism you would find on a rock album rather than a rap album. On the other hand, the delivery feels just like a rap album, being smooth and quickly spoken, rather than melodically sung like on a rock album. Really great fusion ... read more
Full of bangers and absolutely revolutionary for 80s pop and pop in general. Every song here slaps, and some are even super underrated (The Girl is Mine is goated π₯Ή)
Listening to this album feels like being lost in a dense forest. I really don’t know how else to explain the calmness and urgency on this album at the same time, super interesting album.
Its loud, bold, and so much fun to listen to. Every song here is just 100% energy the whole time with no breaks. Easily AOTY so far.
The closing chorus and instrumental is genuinely so amazing. I knew Olivia Rodrigo had great ballads, but that singlehandedly tripled my excitement for the album.
My least favorite from the two singles. The bass line that thumps through the whole song really sets the mood for this single, really enforcing the political themes of racial discrimination and surrender on the track. It really feels like a smooth spy movie song (if that makes sense) with this darker theme and more direct performance.
The rap-rock fusion thing was totally unexpected from Vince, especially after Dark Times (an album whose production I thoroughly enjoyed). That being said, this might just be better than even Dark Times as it hits way harder and has way better rapping (compared to the already great rapping on Dark Times) across the whole track. I know this is just a single, but it has me super excited for the full project.
This album seriously feels like a walk in the park on a warm sunny day.
The beats, as expected, are lush and beautifully arranged. The jazzy instrumentation under the rapping from Shing02 is such a calming experience. Shing02 does the beats justice as well with well written and smooth verses across each track with themes of death, peace, and love. Nujabes was taken from us too soon :(.
Catchy songs, heartfelt vocals, incredible atmosphere, but I feel like these songs either don't stick around long enough or stick around too long for them to have the impact that I feel like they should. The closer, hit it light it twist it, is an incredibly emotional track with this cool riff that could be so much better if it was just one minute longer. Still, really fun album.
His voice takes a little getting used to, but the songs here are pretty great (except for Fire and Ice, maybe I just don’t understand the vision behind that one). Specifically, its the production that speaks to me. The huge bass and the melodies that run across all of these songs are a magical experience that you come to expect from Fakemink production.
I feel like I need to highlight some of the best production on here, which is on the final song’s production “Etna.” ... read more
The arrangements here are oddly beautiful and haunting at the same time, its kind of otherworldly. Obrigado is by far one of the best songs we have heard this year.
E xperimental Rap isn’t very experimental for Peggy. That being said, it is by no means a regression from his previous works, and is another good album from him. His rapping is still smooth (although the content is a little stale) and the beats are super cool and diverse. All in all, I just feel like the marketing for the album, specifically its name, gave everyone the wrong idea for what it was going to be, just another good JPEGMafia album.
Production is actually insane on this and combined with his kinda pitchy and distorted voice, its a really cool experience.
Its a pretty cool debut, but it feels empty. The opening few minutes of this already short EP are purely instrumentals, which isn’t a bad thing necessarily, but they feel like they could use either vocals or something extra to drive the songs. The songs themselves are cool, like Crocodile Woman is genuinely a great song with a great performance from Sultan. I just want him to flesh these songs out a little more. Still a cool EP.
Might be the worst intro on any Drake album and it basically doesn't get any better. Like genuinely apart from like 3 songs (WNBA, Classic, Gen 5) this whole album is either a snooze-fest or actually bad. Even those 3 songs aren't anything special, they are just better than the rest of this album. Unlike ICEMAN, this album really doesn't have the same good production and has more boring beats with boring rapping over it.
It is just kind of boring. Most of these beats have a ton of potential, and Drake actually does well in moments on here. For example, the first half of National Treasures is pretty great and 2 Hard 4 The Radio is also pretty fun, but these moments get erased pretty quickly after listening to the full song. Going back to National Treasures, the second half absolutely ruins the vibe and just kind of feels like Drake is trying to add a shocking twist to his song just for the sake of it. Honestly, ... read more
