the 4 singles are the only parts of this album that truly and fully capture the spirit of doja cat's recent-ish tweets regarding changing her image and adopting a sound that departs from the pop-rap style of her previous releases
almost every non-single from this album is the exact same structure, cadence, sound, etc., and it's not even a new sound. this album is just amala + planet her
best songs are attention, paint the town red, demons, fuck the girls, ouchies, attention, and balut
Guts is a much bigger and bolder statement than Sour in terms of style, theme, aesthetic, and lyrics, but doesn't quite stick the landing as far as solidifying Olivia in a sound is concerned.
I feel like discussing the quality of an album from which all 8 singles reached the top 3 of the Hot 100 (the most from any album ever) — and of which 6 were #1 hits (the most from any album ever) — is a little bit unproductive.
I gotta say I don't hate this album. I love the stylistic and sonic evolution for Melanie, even if I am extremely partial to the Crybaby aesthetic, and I think that Melanie's vocals, although nothing new or groundbreaking, fit the style she adopts here well. The production for the most part is consistent and interesting, with a number of stylistic switch-ups in the structures of the songs.
