the first $uicideboy$ mixtape also serves as their first truly special project. after their last KYS flopping hard on it's face, they sought to redeem themselves just a lil over a month later. and to great success might i add! production here knocks hard and has a varied enough sound throughout to remain consistently engaging. paired with the finest performances yet from the duo.
uhhhh...so heres the thing. it can be very easy to just discredit everything here and toss it in the proverbial trash. however, i have some level of respect for their attempts to diversify their sound even this early on. and for what its worth, a lot of the messy, horrifically ugly songs they made during this era built the foundation for what would later become their most DEFINING tracks in the mid to late era.
that being said, GOOD LOOOOOORD this ep. okay, i gave it a fair few listens and it ... read more
overall this project just, is not it. obnoxious sex bars and bland beats litter this project with the only salvageable song being aphrodite. everyone draws attention to the cover and i think its because the music has so little to offer on it's own.
a slight return to form, with a sound that sounds more akin to their 2015 run of projects. the pitch-shifted vocals don't do much for my ears but i do enjoy the overall vibe of this ep. has a fair amount of focus relative to the prior work.
initially, i thought the aoty crowd was being unusually snobbish with this release upon first listen but the more i step back and evaluate these songs in regards to how it represents the duo, the attempts at experimenting with their sound: it just falls kinda flat. not to mention, we're back to unnecessary lame remixes.
explores a much darker sound compared to their first KYS to mixed results. ruby experiments a lot more with an aggressive vocal approach that i find to be fairly entertaining and scrim delivers some fun verses but overall, was not impressed with the sound. very muddy.
the beginning of it all. the beats are fairly primitive and wear their influences on their sleeves but has some pretty engaging flows and a bunch of quotables that would permeate the rest of their career.
overall quality of tape dampered the "remix" tracks; chopped and screwed is one thing but simply slowing your song down and labeling it a remix is lame.
simultaneously dated and forward-thinking, i wanted to like it more than i actually did based off the strength of singles such as Skyfall and Mamacita but some of the sounds that Travis is pulling together here develop into such a mess that while the overall aesthetic and vision is something I can appreciate, it is NOT something i always enjoy listening to. (i.e. Don't Play & Sloppy Toppy)
at least Vultures 1 had some energy behind it, this shit is so phoned in i cannot believe it. he supposedly wants to retire and based off hearing this, its obvious: this dude does NOT have another album in him worth hearing.
still mixed like shit, not that it matters; all of the songs have the least inspired production kanye has EVER performed over. if he even is performing anymore, considering he's willing to release Sky City with a blatant AI generated verse.
garbage. had a ... read more
personally speaking, i don't think this record is for me. which is fine. he's made it clear that hes making music for himself with this record.
some songs here and there i enjoy, some ideas that are pretty cool, but overall, just not something i would listen to. a shame.
not to mention the mix overall is pretty messy and it feels very unfocused. interested to see how these songs tie into the movie.
mix isn't fantastic, but i see the vision. its a pretty, bouncy infidelity jam. completely different from previous single Lithonia in an underwhelming way. i'd be interested to see the rest of the record but i imagine it's going to be all over the place sonically.
one of the most insane sonic progressions of any song i've heard this year. very engaging and i love the interpolation of the different samples and im ESPECIALLY in love with that heavy ass guitar.
based off these two singles, JPEG seems to be aiming bigger than rap and i'm here for it. his vocal approach as always bold yet here, the delivery and inflections are so focused.
can't wait to hear in the context of the record!
harmless. forgettable.
some highlights here and there but for a concept record based around a legacy character YOU created; to just bail on the concept 5 songs before the record is even over and say it was all a dream is just lame lol
took a few listens; works incredibly well as a single. the vocal approach is bold and unique for gambino all while bringing the energy to match the (ALWAYS) gorgeous arrangement by Göransson. interested to see how this song fits into the themes of the movie/record.
a great choice for a first single; leaves me wanting to hear more and excited for the direction of the new album
damn near perfect until it isn't; i still love and appreciate this album's ambition and artistic heights within the realm of hip-hop/the music stratosphere. the problem i take with the tail end of the record is both in how it's thematic ideas become confused in goal (clear signs of kanye being too focused on appealing to the masses rather than his own artistic vision; his words not just mine) & how sonically, the songs' instrumentals are overall flaccid and never reach the same heights ... read more
riTchie drops a project of fun ideas and introspective lyrics.
very cool but not as cohesive or focused of a project as i would like.
its time to start holding kanye to a higher standard cause what the fuck even is this man? the worst moment of clarity for me was finishing the album and realizing that, with two more records of slop on the way, my hopes of hearing a fully finished project would better be forgotten.
where to even begin...?
kanye actively makes every song worse. on his own album, i am dreading when this dude speaks.
and the shit he choses to spit over...the laziest, no creativity, no purpose, no themes, no ... read more
