Boris With Merzbow - 04092001
40

A pretty good combination of boris riffs and merzbow chaos, but the mix is absolutely horrible. I know it's a live album and would have sounded great in person, but the recording of this makes it basically unlistenable compared to their other work.

My New Band Believe - My New Band Believe

Warm, heartfelt, and lovely. It takes musical aspects of other Windmill musicians and filters them into a unique folky blend. The vigorous guitars of black midi still plunge through the music like great horses down a lane. Moments of suspension hang from flinging strings of guitar until they spread out and settle into the ears pleasantly. It is fascinating how this mirrors songwriting and musical aspects of Geordie Greep, but in finality Geordie's incel epic is much more harsh and ... read more

Zach Bryan - With Heaven On Top

Came into this wanting a comforting taste of americana and wasn't too disappointed. Some great songs like South and Pine are on here, and it's overall an enjoyable enough album with a slightly tiring runtime.

The Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour

Iriz's December Challange Day 8

This record was made in the midst of the Beatles' insane late 60s run. While other albums in this period contain more experimentation or general acclaim, I think Magical Mystery Tour blends the pop and artistic flair of the Beatles better than any other. Another unique aspect is that this album doesn't have any sad songs. While most Beatles albums are generally bright, they usually have a few darker and melancholy songs. Magical Mystery Tour is ... read more

Charlemagne Palestine - Strumming Music

Iriz's December Challenge Day 6 (I will get back on track)

I think this album demonstrates the beauty of human performance. Use of a Player Piano/Disklavier by people like Aphex Twin is cool and serves a purpose, but a composition like Strumming Music relies heavily on the minor imperfections and fluctuations of the human touch. Without it, the minimalistic nature of the music would soon become dreadfully boring. Throughout the whole piece, the endlessly repeating notes slightly rise and ... read more

Iriz's December Challenge Day 2, A Sountrack From a Comfort Flim.

This film and the novel are both very special to me. I read the book when I was rather isolated from people because of how I moved apartments. It's themes and atmosphere matched my situation pretty well. I read the whole series in a pretty short amount of time and would spend hours many nights reading and reading. It was a solid thing for me to grasp onto in a rather uneasy time. I watched the movies later when I was ... read more

Dario Marianelli - Pride & Prejudice

Iriz's December Challenge Day 1

In an interview with Forbes, Dario Marianelli states that his goal with the score for Pride & Prejudice was to make it fresh and modern. This is an interesting decision considering that the movie is based off of the Jane Austen novel, but Marianelli blends the 18th and 19th century setting of the story (it is different in the book vs. this movie) perfectly with more modern composition techniques. He directly cites "Liz On Top Of The World", ... read more

Alex Warren - You'll Be Alright, Kid

"Who knew in no time you would be taking mine
Down the aisle to Lana Del Rey?"

That does sound pretty nice. The stomp-clap beats however do not.

I'm curious how music like this still holds relevance. Who listens to it? Perhaps it's the midwest christian parents who are glad that the charts hold something they approve and their kids who consider Alex Warren a master in emotional songwriting. Much of the production shares elements with Christian Contemporary Music, and I ... read more

Giant Claw - Decadent Stress Chamber

On Bandcamp, Keith Rankin describes this project as, "a ‘free-pop’ that indulges in musical tangents and diverse song structures within the form". This does a great job of describing the chaotic, but structured jumble of synths and vocal samples that make up much of Keith's work. The vocal sample on the very first song represents pop ideals, as it comes from "Nobody" by Selena Gomez (I'm not completely sure, but it sounds extremely similar). Many of the ... read more

Some incredible beats by the Alchemist and some nice flows from Freddie.

TURQUOISEDEATH - Guardian
85

Like Jules Verne, TURQUOISEDEATH tells the story of traveling the the center of the earth. The album follows along the supposed journey with its small beginnings and epic finale.

It's some of the best drum&bass/jungle oriented electronic music I've ever heard. It creates mystical soundscapes that eventually morph into intense, bass heavy breakdowns. The sounds and the artwork evoke aquatic feelings. I really like this album, though I have never heard any of Turqouisedeath's ... read more

John Michel - Egotrip
75

"My pockets full of myself"
That line kind of sums up the themes from the whole album. It is definitely an egotrip. One that propelled John Michael into creating this great album.

Soul samples create the foundation for the songs and are put to great use. The drums are groovy and the few guitar solos/lines emulate that devil in a new dress sound amazingly.

Lyn Lapid - The Outsider

Imogen's July Underrated Albums Challenge day #2

This is a short debut that sounds like mainstream indie pop mixed with DIY elements. At times it also reminded me of modern Disney songs. The songwriting is ok I guess. I did like the writing on "I Guess That Was Goodbye" though. There was some unique instrumentation throughout, but other songs just sounded like something I'd already heard before. Not a bad ep, but I didn't enjoy it very much.

Imogen's July Underrated Albums Challenge day 1

This project scratched an itch in my brain by putting the off-kilter rhythms I tap out with my fingers into actual music.

On this day I ate a crunchy peanut butter and honey sandwich and began to listen to this ep sometime after 9 pm. That was a good idea. If i'd heard it during the morning I probably wouldn't have enjoyed it as much. I love the guitar tone and especially love how the mix isn't so heavy. Some random TOOL ... read more

Oklou - choke enough
75

This is an album that I had on repeat after release. In fact, it's my most played album of the year so far. I just really enjoyed a lot of these songs. I really enjoy this quiet, thick, synth sound that makes up the backbone of the album. The lyrics went straight over my head, and I still don't understand what most songs are about. The sang melodies are for the most part great and have a nice catchyness. "want to come back" does have some lines that I enjoy, like "I ... read more

Addison Rae - Addison
70

Most of the songs are nice and catchy. The production pretty good throughout and is probably my favorite aspect of the record. I don't care much for her songwriting on a lot of these songs unfortunately, but it isn't horrible at all. Fame is Gun has been stuck in my head for the past week, so I guess that's a plus. Overall, a decent debut that I still enjoyed, but nothing super special. *edit: this has been growing on me

Acid Battery - Look and See
NR

I honestly don't think it's that good, but I'm still happy. This is an improvisation I did on my midi keyboard which was hooked up to a digital synth. This is one single take and is unedited. Everything here is exactly how I played it.

PinkPantheress - Fancy That
85

PinkPantheress absolutely delivers.

The two singles leading up to this were amazing, and I was really excited to see what the whole mixtape would end up sounding like. I was not disappointed. This project blends a variety of electronic genres to create a sparkling 20 minute gem. It seems in a way to pay tribute to many electronic sounds that the UK pioneered or was involved in. Pink's singing is as great as ever, and I think it fits in with the production better than her previous work. ... read more

Black Country, New Road - Forever Howlong
80

BC,NR return. They are a different band now, but the music is still great.

The musical composition has depth and complements the vocals. The writing sounds loose and seems to me like poetry. Now of course all songwriting is basically poetry, but this has an abstract and older feel that is very similar to poetry that I have read. This and the acoustic instrumentation gives the album a dated feeling. There's no specific time period or location, but it definitely feels like something from ... read more

Weatherday - Hornet Disaster

An amazing album. I haven't listened any of Weatherday's previous music, but now I certainly want to. I like that the sound and mix are very raw. It adds emotion and fits the singing nicely. The lyrics usually went over my head, but I did catch some parts. Lines are sung out in such an emotional and seemingly agonizing manner that matches the music perfectly. It gets me emotional sometimes. Stuff like, "You made it easy to miss you" and "Nothing you can say can change ... read more
