An anomaly in terms of Metronomy's discography, Pip Paine is a largely instrumental album (bar Trick or Treatz), a style the group would partially depart from with Nights Out which had a roughly 50:50 ratio, then fully abandon in further releases. This is one of the reasons why Pip Paine is a stand out for the band. The instrumentation is quirky, yet often faultless, perfectly capturing the young, unexperienced spirit of the 3 young men from Totnes, and it's this that makes this album so ... read more
A sophomore album that sadly cannot build on the fun and excitement of its predecessor. Inanimate Objects - despite a shaky start with the mind-numbing The Stone Mill - looks to be very good with personal favourites Molecules and Stockholm. However, they can’t build on this, and soon fall to poor efforts, with a shocking final few songs. This album ended up being a big disappointment, especially after they showcased their talent on When It Was Now. A few tracks to return to here, ... read more
A fun indie pop/dance record which maintains consistent quality throughout. A great run at the beginning outweighs a slightly underwhelming conclusion, however I certainly wouldn’t say the ending songs are bad by any means. Big hit Trojans and also If So, as well as dance-tinged Back Seat are réal stand outs here.
Favs: If So, Trojans, Back Seat, Don’t Make a Scene
Worst: All These Girls, Through the Glass
A fun, interesting cover EP, in which they take songs from rock and pop greats such as the Strokes, David Bowie, and ABBA, and re-vamp them into their own style. A few tracks are great, some aren’t as good as the original, such as What Ever Happened?, but overall, I rarely find myself feeling the need to turn these off to listen to the originals.
Favs: Do You Wanna Dance?
Worst: What Ever Happened?
An album that largely didn’t receive the attention it warranted, in due part to the heavier sound than most of their previous projects, and also to the popier than average listen for your standard rock fan. If you can appreciate both indie rock savagery and power pop mellowness, this is the album for you.
Favs: Orpheus, Clones
Worst: Won’t Be Saved
