"Tinashe’s conviction in her vocal performance and the way she delivers the lyrics make “Nashe” believable.” However, the production is too safe and lightweight to really make a statement, which is unfortunate because this track has serious hit potential."

"I can’t imagine a world where this song won’t be a hit, but “No Brainer” can’t shake the stench of being a lackluster rehash of “I’m The One.” If “No Brainer” and “Top Off” are a taste of what is to come on Father of Asahd, DJ Khaled might want to go back to the drawing board."

"Survive the Summer is exactly the project that Iggy needed to get her career back on track. This collection of songs demands that she be respected as a rapper and overall artist."

"Travis has crafted a concept album about the darkness of life and love through the story of Astroworld’s real-life gentrification. Travis took every stereotype about trap music and eradicated them. ASTROWORLD is easily one of the best albums of the year; it is a masterclass in genre-bending and story-crafting like no other."

"On “Chun-Li” Nicki rails against everyone “painting her out to be the bad guy.” With a slight shot at Cardi B (“How many of them coulda did it with finesse? / Now everybody like, “She really is the best.” / You play checkers, couldn’t beat me playin’ chess.”), “Chun-Li” is clever and my personal favorite out of the two."

"The hood renaissance imagery of the single artwork is apparent throughout the song. Hood Nicki is back, Mixtape Mentality Nicki is back and she is the most hungry she’s been in a while."

"Nicki raps about, well, rich sex. More specifically, she preaches that she will only put out for men that she deems deserving (one clear prerequisite: wealth) and implores other women to do the same."

"Ariana and Nicki have an inimitable chemistry and even though the song is quite derivative, lyrically, their respective vocal performances more than make up for it."

"Nicki Minaj has never been a one-note rapper or artist, hell, she even brought back her Roman alter ego for a quick minute. Queen is not self-absorbed, it’s empowering and enlightening, and so much more. Now, there are definitely a few songs that could have been cut (“Sir,” “Bed,” “2 Lit 2 Late”), as is the case on many long albums. The album suffers significantly because of its length. At times it can be a chore to listen to which detracts from ... read more
"For her first original music release since the devastating and deadly bombing at her concert in Manchester Arena last year, Ariana has delivered a 90s pop/R&B banger brimming with maturity and ecstasy."

"Grande’s layered background vocals, the main melody, and the supporting harmonies are absolutely excellent. Nevertheless, there are two overall issues with this track: Ariana’s enunciation in the pre-chorus is a clear regression from her previous improvements and the second and third choruses are entirely too long and repetitive."

"Taken as just a song, “God is a woman” is nothing short of excellent, taken as a sociopolitical statement “God is a woman” is initially startling, but ultimately too vague, lyrically, to cause any real controversy."

"Sweetener is the album Ariana always wanted to make, but it feels like she only scrapes the surface of the album she was born to craft. Nevertheless, Sweetener is an incredible achievement, an album that marks new artistic ground for her while still building on her status as a pop titan."

Look, the song isn’t bad by any means, but for two artists as unfiltered, fearless, and intricate as Kendrick and SZA, the song feels oddly ordinary. Of course, both artists will have to finetune some sections of their artistry in service of a mass-released superhero film, but the song does feel devoid of any originality.

“Filthy,” is about five minutes of groovy funk and Prince vibes. “Filthy” sounds like an updated and more mature version of the FutureSex/LoveSounds era; there is clear innovation here, and it sounds polarizing at first but it is actually quite great. Lyrically, the song seems to act as a bridge from The 20/20 Experience era to the Man of the Woods era. Justin smoothly and boastfully reciting “Haters gon’ say it’s fake, so real” over a warbling ... read more
Just after the anniversary of In Living Color, Bruno and Cardi dropped the video to their remix of “Finesse,” the latest single off of Bruno’s timeless album, 24K Magic. The new mix of the song, is thankfully not just, a cut-and-paste of Cardi’s verse into the original track.
Cardi kicks off the song with a cute a distinctive 90’s flow and there are some added “ayyees” in the background of the production. One thing about Cardi B, she may not be a super ... read more
Like it or not, Cardi B is here to stay. Cardi cements herself as the reigning princess of rap on her new 21 Savage-assisted single, “Bartier Cardi.” The track remains in the New York trap lane that Cardi first cruised down with the inescapable “Bodak Yellow;” unlike her previous single, this song is stacked with hooks in the chorus, pre-chorus, intro, and verses. In the spirit of Christmas, Travis Scott and Quavo have finally bestowed their highly anticipated collaborative album. The album commences with a soulful Otis Redding sample followed by the hottest streak of rap tracks all year. The first four songs on the album showcase the inimitable chemistry of Travis and Quavo and their acute ear for melody and production. On his ninth LP, Revival, Eminem returns with a sense of nostalgic solipsism that attempts to break new ground while still being content with its legacy. The brightest spots on Revival come courtesy of the guest vocalists. Beyoncé and Skylar Grey give emotional performances on “Walk on Water” and “Tragic Endings,” respectfully; their soft fluttery tones provide the perfect contrast to Eminem’s gruff voice. Ed Sheeran provides his pop edge to ... read more
