I originally gave this a 100 and called this another masterclass from San, and left it at that. But now, this album has taken an entirely new significance.
In mid to late 2016, I was just a dumb squeaker kid on the internet. I was getting heavily into dubstep, I already liked it from the early 2010's via Skrillex's explosion onto the EDM scene, but this was an exponential regression into it. I was playing ROBLOX and discovered a community that builds festival stages and uses them to host ... read more
I absolutely loved “Cameo Blue Estate”, “Innervisions” was my 2nd most played song of 2025. So going into this project, I was super excited. I’m mildly disappointed that interludes make up 1/3 of the tracklist, but theres still some great songs on Mascara’s debut LP. “Marrow” may overtake “Innervisions” as my favorite song by them. Its so beautiful and seductive. I’d love to hear more of that in future releases.
I feel like this would be much more appreciated if it was released a year or two earlier. With the electropop/electroclash scene being conquered by artists such as Ninajirachi & Underscores, this album gets overshadowed by them. Which is a shame because there are genuinely some very well produced & written songs on this album. Tiffany gets very vulnerable in her lyrics here. Intrigued to hear more.
Bro is going absolutely bonkers on the saxophone. The album itself can be a bit one note after awhile, but Maruja has created the sound of the revolution. A modern post-rock masterpiece.
The fall off in the ladder half is slightly noticeable, but Slayyyter still manages to dish out high quality tracks. Its undeniable how insane this album starts, with “DANCE…” having one of the best synth build-ups I’ve ever heard, and then the super high octane “CRANK”.
I am feeling gay off that tequila.
Some of the catchiest songs I’ve heard. On first listen I couldn’t get “Lovefield” out of my head, and I still can’t. Phenomenal songwriting and production from April. One of the biggest talents in hyperpop right now.
