I could write almost an identical review for two metal albums out this week; this and the new Urne album. Here's a band I really like, two really strong albums in, a little bit of attention online, but not quite broken through to the big leagues of their genre. Personally I've been very excited for their new album, hoping they bring together the best of everything they have done so far and get the attention and acclaim they deserve. Unfortunately, while I don't entire dislike ... read more
So many albums this year that people are wetting themselves over that just hit as pretty mid. This is fine, but I cannot understand the rave reviews.
Wanted to like this, like quite a lot of black metal, but just found this to be a muddy, samey, overlong directionless mess for the most part.
Its okay, certainly stuff to like in here, but overall its not heavy enough to be this slow.
Works best when they avoid the temptation to fall into the heavy-heavy-chug-chug-chug mode so much modern metal relies on. 'Innocence' and 'Nomad' are guilty of this. Shines when they push themselves to write more dynamic riffs - 'Heather' being a good example.
This deserves more love than its getting. Top three electronic albums of the year. Middle of this album is incredible.
Living Bad Dreams is the only thing stopping this album being a full 100. Several of the greatest metal tracks of all time, and despite a patchy discography otherwise, this might just be the greatest metal album of all time.
Didn't expect to love this as the last album didn't really gel with me, but this is fucking great.
Just popping in while listening to the new Antlers album to remind people this album is a fucking masterpiece
If you go into this expecting something similar to Deafheaven, Alcest, Sadness, or White Ward, you're probably going to be disappointed. Much like the Low Before The Breeze album earlier this year (which was less popular than this album), this record has as much to do with noise music as it does any Black Metal derived genre. There are certainly moments of tremolo picked guitars, blast beats and sceams, but theres a lot of other stuff going on too - noise punk, hardcore breakdowns, and ... read more
Some wonderful art rock genius moments on here, hampered by too many sections of aimless meandering. The good stuff is 9/10, the less good 5/10.
There is definitely some interesting stuff on here, but its quite a mixed bag, it jumps around a lot and can't work out what it wants to be. Sometimes it sounds like they want to be Death Grips, but then they'll switch into a pretty boring nu-metal section. I also think the most straightforward rap sections are the weakest, especially any autotune stuff which just sounds terrible in 2025.
This album holds a deep and special place in my heart. Along with the first time I heard Iron Maiden, The National, Tribe Called Quest, Max Richter, or Four Tet, the first time I heard this album I felt like my life changed. A few listens in, and I had experience I still remember vividly today.
It was winter 2007, and I was in my first term at uni. My girlfriend of a couple of years (and as of 2025, my wife of 10 years) was at a different uni a couple of hours away.
I was on a quiet train ... read more
The vast majority of this album is a muddy mess. Apart from the solos and breakdowns you can barely hear the guitars. A couple of cut through moments, but most of it is just too much of everything all at once.
I honestly feel like there is some sort of mass delusion going on with this album. This is a mess and he sounds actively bored making it. I genuinely can’t tell if he’s just making it up on the spot. The music itself is not engaging, the vocal style is irritating and the lyrics don’t seem to have a great deal of insight.
Going against the consensus here but I found this rather dull. On at least one occasional I literally didn't notice it had changed track.
