Death Grips - Exmilitary
95

Death Grips pushes the lyrical and sonic tropes of Rock music to the extreme with Exmilitary, a violent, industrial, experimental rock-rap debut project, and is undoubtedly my favorite mixtape I’ve ever heard, beating out others like Nostalgia, Ultra by Frank Ocean, Faces by Mac Miller, and 1999 by Joey Bada$$.

Main vocalist MC Ride, lyrically, plasters these songs with ideas of depravity, drug use, murder, suicide, and in general, self worship/satisfaction over choosing to fall in line ... read more

JPEGMAFIA & Danny Brown - SCARING THE HOES
85

As someone in the midst of their chronically online music nerd era, I had to relisten to Scaring the Hoes by JPEGMAFIA and Danny Brown. Upon reflection, this album was much more enjoyable and quality than I remember. To be begin, scatterbrained and eccentricity are the two words that can conceptualize the energy this album brings. You see it both in the production and the performances.

You have really crazy, unorthodox production, often having old school 1970’s soul samples mixed with ... read more

MGMT - Loss of Life
85

In their fifth record, Loss of Life, MGMT blends their standard Indie Pop sound with psychedelic rock, coating over it all with digital, glitchy effects and best, most impressive singing of Andrew’s Career. You even see some atypical sounds like triumphant, boisterous horns on Nothing Changes and the 80’s inspired power ballad duet of Dancing in Babylon.

Through this rich soundscape, Andrew and Ben discuss the idea of the Loss of Life, and learning to appreciate it. However, loss ... read more

Kid Cudi - Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin'

Passion Pain and Demon Slayin' is a grower for me. I hated it for the longest time, and while it still is an iffy record for me, this is still the kind of music I like out of Cudi and what I'd prefer for him to make. (Also note that besides this intro, and the talk about production, most of this was written a year ago. I didn't feel like rewriting it, and I agree with some of the points I made, and just edited out the stuff I don't think anymore.)

Production is banging on this one, having that ... read more

"Yo thanks for putting me on game CDTV. Make Belief is alright but that second half of Russel Westbrook on a Farm is genuinely great. Good and fair recommendation!"

"@oreomilkshake03 eh besides Houston Old Head, Demons, Out of this World, and Sandman (if you wanna count that), there are not really any songs where I am coming for the lyrics."
On Tame Impala - The Slow Rush
"@ItsOasis What I mean by "bland poppiness" is the lack of psychedelia vibes throughout the album. A lot of this album has a very clean, sanitized soundscape, and I generalized it by calling it "bland poppiness". A lot of the time, even when I enjoy songs, I almost always feel that some more inventive, possibly psychedelic production would have provided more reason to come back (mainly in regards to One More Year/One More Hour)."

"Respect for acknowledging the userbase’s extreme brain rot. It is frustrating when my shorter, briefer “reviews” tend to be more viewed than the extensive reviews. It’s so refreshing to have someone else share this POV"
