listening to this in 2025 felt like quite the retrospective, I don't think I have given this a full listen through since like 2020.
yeah the album is really funny and weird but I also think we don't give this album enough credit for what it did to hyperpop and really electronic music as a whole. I wholeheartedly believe there are so many albums that would not exist had this not happened. I appreciate its boundless nature here and willingness to play around.
entire album fucks front to back top to bottom. I listened a couple months ago but I should have many years ago.
fuck. I'll have to add thoughts to this... later
ok my tears still haven't dried but goddamn. what a touching album. one of the most touching albums I have laid ears on. only complaint is that "fuck me eyes" sticks out really bad compared to the rest of the album but I like the song a lot so how much can I really complain. beautiful vocals. devastatingly touching lyrics. gorgeous instrumentals. amazing production. I can't ask for much more. ethel once again proved ... read more
idk, I really didn't think this was bad at all, especially for a debut album. many of the tracks on this have stayed in my rotation, I especially like "high fashion". it's mostly silly and unserious girlpop and there is nothing wrong with that. it sounds nice. there are even some artpop elements sprinkled around. the only song I found painfully derivative (albitet still very catchy and on repeat) was "diet pepsi".all I could hear was Lana Del Rey seriously. I also ... read more
I honestly think this album is on par with "Loveless", especially with the texture and quality. extremely beautiful, not sure why this band seems to be so obscure. will remain in my rotaion.
mmm yummy. has a lot of elements that I love from the "queef jerky" project but is more serious. but also not too serious. I think maybe the track's could have been organized differently and I wish the runtime was longer but at the same time I'm not sure what could be added to this, I just want more. idk, it's goood.
I revisited this album for its anniversary for the first time in years and I definitely didn't used to be obsessed with it for nothing. it sounds amazing. this album is genuinely when music became real to me. like I said, sounds so amazing, unique as well. I will admit I found some of the lyrics corny/cringe at times, but I'm very surprised at how well this album has held up as a whole over the years, especially for having come out in 2015 because I think it was an era notorious for ... read more
extremely disappointing honestly. I respect Alex G for taking his music in the direction he wants, but for me this album is void of a lot of the things that made me love his music in the first place, and none of it really stuck for me. in fact, I found some of the tracks kind of odd and confusing. the production sounds nice nonetheless and I do enjoy the track june guitar. this album definitely listenable, just didn't do it for me.
amazing. I think it can be hard to pull off experimental "hyperpop"(and whatever other genres apply) but this was just beautiful. many of these songs have been on repeat for me. catchy and hard as fuck. no skips
I think more people are gonna be catching onto this band soon. this is really really well done "heavy shoegaze", very raw and angry at times but still very beautiful. the fusion of genres works really well. I'll have to revisit this band
gosh idk why I didn't listen to this sooner. I don't listen to a TON of black metal, so my analysis could be totally off, but I think this is a really interesting modern adaptation of it. usually black metal tends to confine itself in with the same visuals and lyrical elements every time, but this is very unique in that it pushes the limits of what black metal can be, I suppose that's why it's categorized as post-black metal. it's almost like if you took black metal and ... read more
I feel like a lot of modern shoegaze is kinda uninspired and low quality, but this album changed my perspective and gave me a lot a hope. I’m a huge fan of what this band is up to. the MBV influence is definitely noticeable but they still have their own unique sound going. I’m so in love with this
god it's so good. digital hardcore rocks. this album has been captivating me for years but I had yet to listen to the full thing til recently. it's just so intense and colorful and fun.
sad lo-fi folk indie music with a nostalgic sound I'm convinced only Alex G can pull off so well. of course it's good. controversial opinion though apparently: I like Trick quite a bit more... . there were just a few tracks on here that were a bit meh and I don't feel that way about Trick. it's possible I just need another listen though.
I struggle to leave a “bad” review for this band because I really love them and what they’re doing, but this album is just okay. there are two songs on here that I REALLLLY love but the rest didn’t hit for me. I am excited for future releases nontheless because I think they have something, it just needs some polishing. happy to see that goth music keeps living on.
delicious creepy goth rock with lots of religious themes and the zestiest post punk vocals I have ever heard lol. makes me feel so goth n glam. not a fan of the word choice in Romeo’s Distress but other than that I think this is a super super great album. I like consistently go back to songs off this, I love it.
this right here is exactly why this band is called "The Cure". the touching and confessional lyrics of Robert Smith break you down into a comfortable melancholy where your soul is healed. the additional beautiful soundscape and journey that you are taken as the album plays out just takes it to a 10/10. I am so ever grateful for this album's existence. it's sad, it's happy, it's cathartic, and so very luscious on the ears.
