this album has been my rock as my angst persists into my near twenties. great lyricism and I am totally in love with the raw sound. thank you I Hate Sex.
my ears were absolutely glued to my headphones for all 1.5 hours of this ambience. incredibly gripping and haunting like no other album I have listened to. I think the most unsettled I have ever felt listening to an album before but in the best possible way.
I struggle to say anything more than this album means so so so so much to me. the writing is just so good. I've never heard more beautiful screamo vocals, they capture the emotions behind everything so extremely well. I feel it. it's so raw and visceral. I don't know if screamo gets any better than this.
the sound here kinda reminds me of lana del rey but darker/less poppy and with religious trauma. this album is so emotionally rich and vulnerable. I loveddddd indulging in the southern gothic themes. mixing smooths everything over into a nice cohesive sound (could be seen as a detriment, but I thought it was nice) and I liked the addition of guitar solos throughout. it’s obvious from this listen alone that ethel has a clear vision and distinct style and I want more!!!!
gloomiest most emotionless sounding shoegaze I've ever heard and I love it. I don't know if it was intentional, but its sort of like emotionless modern shoegaze with a touch of glum, depressed post punk. a lot of other reviewers point out that it is mediocre and boring and I see where they are coming from, but I enjoy this album nonetheless. I'd skip a song or two on here, but the good songs are VERY good imo. I love the way they layer the guitars to create such a messy and ... read more
pretty mood/soundscape created here. noisy yet soft and pleasing on the ears, more polished and seamless than their previous works. I thought it was well put together and a good listen, maybe lacking a little in emotion and dynamics though.
unpolished girl punk that is borderline bad, and I love it so much. in love with the staticky, fuzzy soundscape and heavy distortion created here. sounds like everything was recorded in one raw, angry take and its so lovely. main complaint is that a lot of the songs are indistinguishable from one another, and the interludes, especially "Star Belly" seem out of place and unnecessary.
wow, beautiful hardcore album. flows together like a dream. manages to sound messy ear grating in the most intentional and beautiful way, and softens it good when it needs to too. the mix of sounds and styles just comes together perfectly. hits satisfyingly hard!
I really love this album. by no means is it anything revolutionary but it is such a nice and contained little thing with such a cute an addictive soundscape. I was obsessed when it came out, and was worried it wouldn’t sound as good as I remembered, but upon returning I am very pleased. such a cute and pretty album with some good confessional and emotional moments too.
FLAWLESS blend between club bangers and emotionally confessional moments. such perfect timing too, this album is perfect for drowning out all of the fear brought about by the political and economic state of the world rn.............. 365 party girl forever.
it's like one longgggg dynamic song. so punchy and creepy with dark and interesting subject matter. how do people even make things that sound this good?????
only (kinda) complaint is that it is a bit one note, but it still makes the album a good listen.
total 2010's indie hidden gem IMO. never heard anything like this still, got into it in 2017 and a couple tracks on here became lifelong staples for me. only got into it back then due to the animation memes tho..................
only complaint really is that it sounds a bit cheap/dated and painfully 2016 now. but does what it does very well.
my life before and after hearing this album are two different things
ugh. beautiful. If this album could be personified I would kiss it.
why can’t The 1975 make more albums like this 🙁??????? I enjoy the wailing synths and heavy autotune and all of the signature little miscellaneous noises throughout this album (seen on ILIWYS too but not used as interestingly imo), and all of the beats are quite catchy. I appreciate that they explore the topic of modern relationships and things as well because I think it is interesting and worth examining. also I am upset by how relevant the track Love It If We Made It still is.
