Kanye West - Donda
75

Donda is a messy and bloated listen, but is one of his most heartfelt in a way. This album kind of feels like what 'JESUS IS KING' wanted to be, and definitely the one that should have been made. The album explores his themes of family, grief, as well as his redemption after becoming religious. It feels more integral to the album then his previous endeavour of 'JESUS IS KING'

The album cannot be discussed without mentioning its rollout. The album was initally announced ... read more

Mos Def - Black on Both Sides
92

I finally sat down to write about one of my favorite rap albums ever: Black on Both Sides by Mos Def (now known as Yasiin Bey).

I first found him through Ms. Fat Booty, and I was hooked right away, the storytelling, the smooth flow, that unforgettable sample. Not long after, I heard his work with Talib Kweli as Black Star, and when Thieves in the Night came on, I knew I’d stumbled onto something special. The next day I played his debut front to back, and it hit me almost instantly: this ... read more

Scarface - The Diary
87

Refusing to stan The Diary almost feels like hip-hop treason. Scarface has always had that rare balance of brutal street realism and deep, painful reflection, and on this album he sounds like he’s operating at his absolute peak. His voice has that heavy authority you’d hear from Chuck D, but with a Southern drawl that gives it even more weight. He can be as raw as N.W.A at their harshest, but he’s also sharp enough lyrically to stand toe-to-toe with Ice Cube, which you can ... read more

A Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Marauders
91

When everything starts piling up, Midnight Marauders feels like somewhere safe to land. A Tribe Called Quest lean into that smooth, jazzy boom-bap sound that feels calming instead of confrontational, and honestly, depending on my mood, I reach for it more often than The Low End Theory just because it’s so easy to throw on anytime.

Q-Tip and Phife Dawg still sound completely in sync, trading verses like second nature, and the bass-heavy production somehow hasn’t aged a day. But at ... read more
