Playboi Carti - MUSIC
65

it definitely didn't need to be 30 songs, but i still enjoyed a decent amount of it. the features carried and allowed some tracks to stand out throughout the 75-minute tracklist. otherwise, it's another carti album-- if you like him, it's great, and if you're bored of his sound, it's not. i find myself somewhere in between; it's nothing new, but i can still appreciate parts of it.

favorite track: good credit

Lady Gaga - MAYHEM
60

well. it sounds pretty good if you zone out for most of it, which i unconsciously did for the latter half of the album because it gets repetitive at that point. some of the writing is also pretty hard to listen to as well. otherwise, it's a pretty standard gaga album, not doing anything new, but still delivering in danceability with a bit of chaos.

favorite song: zombieboy

venturing - Ghostholding

and once again jane delivers on a shoegazey project with incredible melodies! that, along with the great storytelling and production makes for a super engaging listen. happy vday thanks jane remover.

Oklou - choke enough
93

this is an absolute powerhouse of an album. i had no idea who oklou was a few months ago, but when i found out this album would have production by ag and danny as well as bladee and underscores features, i was instantly intrigued. and she totally delivered!
this album is minimal in an early digital way, creating strong cohesion and an overwhelming sense of nostalgia throughout. i’m impressed by the production’s ability to be both layered and understated, taking a variety of dynamic ... read more

smokedope2016 - THE PEAK
76

this feels like eversince and therefore i really like it! the vocals are specifically a higlight for me, especially in their more melodic deliveries. some of it does blur together but i'm a sucker for this production and style so it's not a huge issue for me, especially with how consise the album is.

favorite song: eastbay

2hollis - 2
83

i love this genre and 2hollis does it so well. there's not much variety in sounds here but i could honestly listen to several hours of him doing this, just itches my brain so perfectly.

favorite track: nothing2 lose

Asian Glow - 11100011
74

asian glow does the modern shoegaze/noise pop genre right with this album. i love the diversity in instrumentation and the overall dreamy aesthetics going on here. it's short enough to maintain cohesion and kept me engaged and excited for each track. it's not trying to be over-the-top or overly innovative, and i think that's necessary sometimes!

favorite track: dorothee thines

Ethel Cain - Perverts
70

i'm not super into drone but i am in full support of ethel cain doing whatever tf she wants! there's a sense of despair that this project carries; it left me sitting in the dark not realizing that 90 minutes had passed or that the sun had set. as an art project, i think that "perverts" does a great job conveying the evil shamefulness that seeps uncontrollably out of all of us. i don't necessarily think that it deserves to be judged in the same way the more lyrical ... read more

Alex Unknown - Dreams Like Patchwork (Leave Me Rough Around The Edges)
71

i wasn't very interested in most of these singles but was pleasantly surprised at how much i enjoyed this album as a whole. it's chill and peaceful, yet there are some great dynamics to be found here along with alex's best production yet. still, i'm not completely sold on the vocal processing/delivery, which i think works well in some scenarios and falls flat in others. anyways bring back music posting podcast please.

favorite track: spu_un

Ethel Cain - Preacher's Daughter
94

this is one of the most cinematic albums i've ever heard. it's visually evocative through its storytelling and leaves just the right amount of space for the listener to linger in between ethel's beautiful voice and instrumentation. her heartbreaking writing shines on tracks like "a house in nebraska" and "hard times," balanced by the immense soundscapes of "ptolemaea" and the instrumental section. and of course, "god loves you, but not enough to ... read more

Jane Remover - JRJRJR
100

made my entire year already. jane does rage so well, as she does with every style she takes on, but this track is incredibly special. i love the confidence and experimentation here.

Tyler, The Creator - CHROMAKOPIA
86

this album breaks tyler's traditions in many ways (track 10, 2 year album cycle, etc). still, he knows exactly how to make a great album; chromakopia is sonically and thematically consistent from front to back. i think the vocal features are the right amount of subtle and exciting. a lot of fun things going on, overall very solid!

favorite track: thought i was dead

Conan Gray - Found Heaven
59

conan theoretically suits the 80s popstar vibe, but i feel that this album was executed quite poorly. i was excited for "never ending song," listened to it once when it came out, and never thought about it again. this album's production is decent, but the songwriting is the blandest i've heard from conan. "found heaven" as a whole is just lacking any sort of spark that would make it more than just alright.

favorite track: alley rose

Hippo Campus - Flood
66

another evolution of hippo campus's sound and this one is just... kind of boring. it's still enjoyable, but this lacks anything that makes it stand out in their discography. i miss the creative, risk-taking version of hippo campus, who experimented with various genres and styles even if they didn't quite work out. unfortunately, "flood" is their most generic project to date.

favorite track: madman

JOBA - Russell Boring
78

this was a unique and unexpected route for joba but he executed it so well! this album feels like christmas with my family, very cozy and personal. "american fever" shocked me when it first came out, and i'm glad to see that the rest of the album followed up in a similarly compelling manner.

favorite track: lonestar

Magdalena Bay - Imaginal Disk
90

it's conceptual, it's transformative, and it's incredibly danceable!!! synthpop is so back. i was not familiar with magdalena bay before the internet started freaking out about this album but i'm so glad i checked this album out. even the interludes are insane.

favorite track: death & romance

Sabrina Carpenter - Short n' Sweet
69

this is me asking jack antonoff to please please please put some energy into his songs.

other than that, this album is decently fun! "bed chem" and "juno" are cheeky and unserious, and "don't smile" is a nice yearning closer. i like the little county twists scattered about as well. "short n' sweet" seems like mediocre pop at first glance, but the fact that "espresso" is made from splice samples proves that there's something ... read more

Porter Robinson - SMILE! :D
86

thank you porter for bringing back text emoticons and making an incredibly parasocial album. it’s very cohesive and compact, though i wish it was longer. the singles are perfect— “cheerleader” is one of the most electric songs i’ve ever heard, and “russian roulette” has a bridge that makes me tear up every time. the rest of the project follows similarly, with “mona lisa” being another exciting and emotionally-charged highlight. i loved the ... read more

Tyler, The Creator - Flower Boy
100

flower boy is quite literally the perfect summer album (though it still holds up year-round). the transition from “sometimes…” to “see you again” is awesome, track seven is so important, and “911 / mr. lonely” is an incredible collaboration. all of the features fit perfectly into the flow of the album.

favorite track: 911 / mr. lonely

Clairo - Charm
83

charm seems to be yet another evolution of clairo's sound. the instrumentation and production are creative and well-suited to the feel of the album as a whole. where sling felt uninspired, charm has regained some of the magic that made immunity so great.
