It makes a pretty compelling case for being better than the original thanks to how much more dynamic it is. Each individual instrument stands out more, avoiding the loudness war compression from the early 2000s. Cursive delivers some of their weirdest material to date in Devourer. To me, this is their strongest album since 2009’s Mama, I’m Swollen, furthering their ambitious social commentary from the previous two albums. Aside from a couple of tracks, I really enjoy the album from beginning to end. The musicianship is top notch and while the lyrics can be jarring at times, they’re still passionate and relatable.
