What makes Purple Haze stand out after 20 years is the production. Yeah, it’s a 2000s rap album, so some of the beats haven’t aged the best; but when it hits, it shines. His arrogant flow works surprisingly well on joyful soul beats. Although there is some bloat toward the end, none of the lows are all that obnoxious or annoying. Pretty great album.
I wish the mix was better, but all the instrumental parts are peak
If Jid or McKinley Dixon released literally the same thing, yall would rate it 90+ at least
Boring. Neither good or bad. Nothing got my attention except for Don't Kill The Party and December 31st. Also beat on Harder is nice. The intro, Can't Be Fucked With and Switch are ok. Corny spoken words or whatever are funny af and the only a standout thing in the rest of the album. That's all, pretty much. I didn't understand Ty, cause he could easily use some of Vultures leftovers (Pay Per View, for example) and this album could've been much better
If only not for the production... “The Cool” was one of my favorites off Food & Liquor, so I was really excited for the album. The concept is great; however, there are many tracks that aren’t related to the main narrative. Which is... not the problem! Most of them are nice and deep (“Hip-Hop Saved My Life,” “Intruder Alert,” “Little Weapon”), and “Fighters” is one of the best rap songs of all time, by the way. But some of the ... read more
This is hard. I appreciate the noise, the melodies and the riffs. However, it just doesn't click with me for some reason, idk. Maybe it's because of the singing, maybe it's because of the inconsistency. There are BIG moments here, like "Teen Age Riot", "Hey Joni" so as overall nice spacey sound on "The Sprawl" and "Candle". Daydream Nation is great, but, for me, nothing more than that
Enjoyed the shit outta this. First listened to it while having time of my life, so many of these songs are tied with my soul. To be fair some of the tracks sound too much similar to each other, and yep I mean the middle section of the album, but that's not that big of a deal. Also ":(failure:(" is one of my favorite interludes oat!! Such an incredible, lovely record
Damn that was great. It could've been perfect if not for that Lil Wayne track idk. Foreword was one of the first Tyler songs I've heard and probably still remains favorite to this day. Garden Shed is amazing too, very experimental. I really like when artists do this one out-of-style song on the lp. Love the hell out of this album
This is genuinely horrible
Ninja could've been a great track, but that freaking outro just caught me frying alongside with this album cover
Other tracks are mostly just boring pieces of shit, except for Money On Money.
Well, it's not THAT bad, however still disappointing. The concept is rich, but the execution is poor. I've saved only "The Cut Off" from the first half. Second half is definitely better, with tracks like Window Pain, Brackets, Kevin's Heart and, of course, 1985, the only 10/10 song for me on the album and ultimative banger. The main problem except for the execution is it just doesn't sound like a Cole album. And kiLL Edward shit is extremely corny even 7 years ... read more
Cole been playing safe here. I didn't expect anything when listening to this album, keeping in mind the mostly negative critical reception towards it, but I was BLOWN AWAY by its consistency, production and overall sound of the album on the first listen. Definitely underrated. For some reason clicks with me way more than The Sideline Story, despite their similarities.
I had a hard time deciding whether I like Wolf or not, but I ended up liking it more than hating it. That’s the best way to describe how I feel about this project. The middle of the tracklist is actually stacked. “Answer,” “Slater,” “48,” “Colossus,” “Party Isn’t Over,” and “IFHY” going back to back is just straight-up essential. It’s the beginning and the ending that make Wolf such an inconsistent album ... read more
Honestly, was surprised considering this being Cole's first project. Originally rated it lower than The Sideline Story, it grew on me significantly. I appreciate his flows, some of the beats, and, first of all, his hunger on this lp. There are some unnecessary tracks here, but I don't think they're ruining the album or whatever.
Nice comeback from Chance! I'd been listening to the singles for a while and really hoped Star Line would be at least decent. And it is, but nothing crazier than this. The first half is actually pretty great. The ending is kind of nice too. The middle is what drags the album down significantly for me. Shoutout to Back to The Go and Highs & Lows — some of the better tracks of 2025.
One of the first J. Cole's songs I heard was Rise And Shine, so I was pretty hyped for this project. As it turned out, Rise And Shine was the best one. There are some really good tracks, like The Sideline Story, Lost Ones, Breakdown. Lyricism right here is alright. My biggest problem with this album is the production style. Songs like Nobody's Perfect, Can't Get Enough or Dollar And A Dream III are just all over the place. Really a mixed bag
The only mind blowing track right here is The Night Watch. 1 out of 9. This is pretty meh for Crimson's standards. Trio and The Lament are decent though. Overall, album suffers from being being too experimental and far from the best in King Crimson's catalog. Mb I need a relisten I ngl.
