2hollis - star
60

I came into "star" with pretty high expectations given the amount of hype surrounding 2hollis. While I personally don't find his sound to be that unique, this album definitely leans into the electronic aspect of underground hip-hop more than other projects in the genre, which is something I have a lot of respect for. He also briefly experiments with acoustics on tracks like eldest child and—in the kindest way possible—I admire his confidence. Overall it didn't ... read more

"more stuff on the way" still sends shivers down my spine. my deepest condolences.

Cocteau Twins - Heaven or Las Vegas
90

It’s easy to see why so many people regard “Heaven or Las Vegas” as a classic. This album does an excellent job at bridging the gap between the tailend of 80s new-wave and humble beginnings of 90’s grunge.

Considering the fact that it took me almost 5 tracks to realize the lead singer of Cocteau Twins was speaking in English, the instrumentals are definitely what makes this project shine. Many people, including myself, were quite shocked to learn this album was made in ... read more

Infinity Frequencies - Between two worlds
70

Now THIS was the music I was looking for when making those shitty “places you’ve seen in your dreams” videos back in 2020.

The album cover to Infinity Frequency’s 2018 project “Between Two Worlds” — a hazy, monotone room with uneven light distribution and nothing accompanying the viewer but the marble busts that stand a couple of feet from them — perfectly encapsulates what the music sounds like.

The uncanny atmosphere created from the layers ... read more

Dean Blunt - BLACK METAL
70

Black Metal is a peculiar album from a peculiar man, or so I’ve heard. I don’t really know much about Dean Blunt other than the fact that he loves carrying his trusty bag of flour around when doing interviews. I didn’t really know what to expect going into this thing, but this hasn't been the first art pop album with a misleading title regarding a subgenre of metal that I’ve listened to, and I REALLY liked the first one.

The mixing on this one is pretty bizarre. ... read more

I'm nearing the end of my quest to listen to all JPEGMAFIA projects. I didn't have high expectations for The Rockwood Escape Plan because I rarely see online discussion about it, and it's unorganized tracklist made me a little apprehensive to give it a listen. My expectations were met, but not exceeded.

This album is LONG, and unlike his other extensive projects, a lot of the tracks feel like filler. There are a couple of nice interludes, but I feel like they don't live up ... read more

The Kossoy Sisters - Bowling Green and Other Folk Songs From the Southern Mountains

Honestly I don’t even remember how this ended up in my library, but I desperately wanted a break from all of the cloud rap I’ve had on repeat, so I decided to give it a try. I’m very glad I did. At first this album made me want to frolic through the woods and roleplay as a chicken caretaker, but that was before I actually started listening to the lyrics. Now I just want to murder my wife and feed rum to our newborn.

This one’s gonna be a long one.

It took me an embarrassingly long time to recognize the brilliance that radiates from The Ghost Pop~Tape (TGPT), and it has recently surpassed SCARING THE HOES as my favorite JPEGMAFIA/Devon Hendryx project. The qualities that make it so remarkable in my eyes are numberless, but I’ll try my best to present them in a cohesive way.

The albums I hold closest to my heart have an untouchable aesthetic to them that couldn’t be recreated no matter ... read more

The KLF - Chill Out
80

One of the few ambient albums I've listened to that I can actually give a cohesive opinion on.

Chill Out is an under-appreciated gem, likely due to the fact that it's not on any streaming service. The euphoria instilled by the 44 minute project is something you rarely get to hear in the endless pit of repetitive ambient nowadays. The only way I could describe it is journeying on a boundless, late-night drive through the deep south as a kid while drifting in and out of sleep. The ... read more

Pleasently suprised with how much I liked this one.

Sickboyrari - Crack Cloud$ Over Arts Kitchen
90

Early Cloud Rappers are often attributed as being "ahead of their time," and I think if anyone is deserving of that title, it's Black Kray.

CRACK CLOUD$ OVER ARTS KITCHEN was one of the first full-length cloud rap albums I ever listened to, and not a single project comes even remotely close to it in quality and representation of the genre as a whole. I previously listened to his album Thug Angel and didn't think too highly of it. There were some standouts but it's ... read more
