Boy Kid Cloud's "A Better Version Of Me" isn't great. This sounds very early on in their career and it does have some charm with the very stock fruity loops sounding production at times but between the really annoying singing, poor production and half baked ideas this was a difficult listen. I will say we all start somewhere and this isn't exactly a lost cause, but this is some very early stuff that is hard to go back to.
From The Start fittingly opens the EP. Even though this sounds ... read more
This is a really pleasant EP from Asa and Stumbleine. It's a sonic bundle of warmth that mixes strings and piano wonderfully with electronic soundscapes. Shura and CoMa's feature on "Tourniquet" really adds a lot for so little with the lowkey whispers of their voices floating along with the track. All the tracks blend together to form a really cohesive feeling of warmth and wonder. This isn't the most mind-blowing project ever - it's just a really easy and pleasant journey.
Gemini's "Fire Inside" is an improvement over his last EP, however it still has its fair share of production issues and uninspired writing. A couple tracks here sound barely mastered at times which really drags the overall project down which I think is a shame because there's some solid stuff here. I really wanted this project to succeed but it really sounds like it could have used more time cooking.
Opening with the title track as per usual for Gemini we're met by a solid electro ... read more
Adrenaline by Zeds Dead is a serviceable old school Dubstep EP with some cheap and dated production. Sonically it's a bit of a downgrade from what I know Zeds Dead for: their 2009 remix of Eyes on Fire by Blue Foundation. Here it feels like there was more of a focus on live settings which just makes the at home listening experience feel like something is missing, but even then I wouldn't call anything here a classic that could still get dropped today and send the floor into bedlam. It's fine ... read more
Culprate's 5 Star is a cool, heavy EP with a good hit rate. Although still with hints of early production quality at times, there is a good range of sound here. Not everything here lands well, but there is still some experiments that are quite stunning.
Ono is a pretty standard Glitch Hop cut with some interesting textures in the bass design. Although nothing stunning, is it pretty fun. The relatively smooth transition into Tentacle is a nice surprise, with a pretty chill cut on our hands ... read more
If Gemini's Graduation is meant to be his graduation as a producer, it barely manages to pass. A serviceable and inoffensive project for the most part, with nothing memorable about the performance. Here I think Gemini is still getting to grips with production and the sort of sounds he is aiming for but possibly due to limitations can't quite hit the mark he's aiming for.
The title track is what I'd best describe as "Welcome Reality at home". Opening with a lonely piano before ... read more
KOAN Sound's Max Out is a fun Neurohop EP filled with classic tunes. Although some of the bass production can sound a little flat at times (something that was fixed with the 2021 remasters), it's still a great listen to this day. Whereas the first three tracks are just solid and fun production with still some quite incredible sound design, One Hand Clap takes it to the next level with otherworldly, almost biological sounding bubbling and churning bass in the build-up leading into drops that are ... read more
Marking the inaugural release of Inspected, Gemini's "Blue" is these days a bit of a relic of the 2011 era of UKF Dubstep. It's a reminder of Call of Duty: Black Ops montages and Xbox Live trash talking. Although quite cheap sounding these days, it does still hit remarkably close sonically to where NERO would get with their incredible album "Welcome Reality", albeit very rough around the edges. With Monstercat launching the same year, this time period is where I would say ... read more
The best way I can describe this project is a half an hour long panic attack. Model/Actriz's debut album is a lot to unpack with unsettling rhythms, strained vocals and instrumentation that demands you move against your will. Dogsbody is a torrent against your senses. It's an attack on your mind and soul. It is distilled fear in musical form.
Donkey Show sets the pace perfectly for this record. Opens immediately with an eerie drone with menacing rising synths(?) behind very soft but unsettling ... read more
When the teaser for QFF/DGTC dropped at the start of this year, I was intrigued. The video was full of amazing ideas and sound production, and seeing not only the entire bass community just immediately freak out but also the wider electronic music community come flocking to the teaser filled me with excitement. Even Geoff Keighley was commenting on the announcement for the projects. After completely forgetting about who Skrillex is after so many years, he was back and in the forefront of my ... read more
Following my excitement of the upcoming album "Quest For Fire" I've decided to go back to where it all began for a lot of Skrillex fans - Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites. I was but a young teen when this EP dropped and this project opened by eyes, ears and heart to what electronic music could be. Now all these years later how does this project hold up?
Surprisingly, quite well. Although quite a cheesy listen these days, it's a cornerstone release for this kind of dubstep and a ... read more
This is a weird project and definitely not quite what I expected of Skrillex's debut album. Recess has dragged me through hell with some of the most torturous compositions I have ever had the displeasure of hearing in the wider EDM scene before pulling me back out and blessing me with some great tunes that are at times quite complex and intriguing and also very fun.
I missed the Recess boat back in 2014. By that time I had stopped listening to Skrillex and wasn't really following with what he ... read more
