I've been following Sam for almost a decade at this point, starting with experiments using Game Boy's, going on to the infamous Furby Organ, the starting of his museum, the megadrone, god I could on. Although I've never given a fuck about Eurovision I'm so proud of him for getting this opportunity. He's an absolute entertainer, inventor and educator through and through. I remember seeing him perform in this tiny pub in Northampton to a couple dozen folks with his manic ... read more
I absolutely adore Save My Number and also really enjoy Peso. If it was just those two tracks here I'd probably put this at a 75+. But good lord how are you going to release an EP and have 3/5 of the tracks be dull interludes and skits that add nothing of substance to the project?
I feel like Lance Skiiiwalker's entire discography is just nothing but missed opportunity. Once in a blue moon he'll have a song that is absolutely wonderful, but you have to slog through so much trite ... read more
Happy Birthday, Skrillex!
I think this is a neat project. Love seeing him experimenting with new ideas here. I just don't think it hits the spot for me and probably won't be something I come back to. The title track does the sound and atmosphere the best in my opinion, with Someone Said being pretty neat as well. Yo Yan I think misses the mark, being too minimalistic to really capture the atmosphere I think he's trying to go for.
One of the greatest (and most underrated) Trance releases from the late 90's. The original mix absolutely sends me every time I hear it. Also featuring remixes from Moonman and Mistral on certain versions of the release (the digital has those plus the Big C's Remix) who are also staple late 90's Trance producers also, I have this in my required listening 90's Trance catalogue.
I've been a Daft Punk fan for my entire life almost. I've loved almost everything they've ever put out or been a part of.
Almost everything.
I have a very mixed relationship with Random Access Memories. It was an album I hated upon release and wrote off as "not real Daft Punk". When it came out I was so confused and frankly more than uninterested in the direction this album goes. I wanted another Homework, another Discovery. Back then, I was too dumb and naive to see ... read more
UKG fans eating well with Bushbaby, Sammy Virji and MPH all coming out with LPs currently. I feel like this project is a bit bloated and I will likely scrape it for material for sets and ignore what I don't like but there are some brilliant tunes in here. Only two additions I don't really get are the opener with Giggs where I feel the vibe does not fit the vocals at all and the interlude being an unnecessary addition.
Solid UKG outing from Bushbaby. Couple of weapons in the mix here. Segue and Forever are absolute standouts for me. Whole thing is certified rave ready back to front.
Comafields might be one of my favourite solo Burial tracks that have come out since Claustro. Almost Dub Techno in style, it gives shades of his Only The Good Times remix or that one unreleased Four Tet collab that was played in 2018 at Lost Village, but with this soul grabbing build that permeates through the track. It's so sick. Awesome tune.
Imaginary Festival gets a thumbs up. Idk I don't really care about it as much as I do Comafields.
I get goosebumps every time I listen to Four Walls. Those last 2 minutes... just ethereal...
Honestly quite shocked about this one. I used to be a fan of Lil Darkie - I enjoyed his batshit insane and abrasive beats and enjoyed tracks like "rap music", "SOUND OF GRINDING A POLITICIAN'S SKULL INTO A FINE POWDER" and even tracks like "GENOCIDE" and "HOLOCAUST". I even enjoyed "boros" for what it was trying to do although I do think it missed the mark at times. I've fallen off pretty hard on his stuff though so haven't been ... read more
This "album" is an April Fool's joke - not on the listener, but on Atlantic. It's no secret that Skrillex has no intention of signing a new contract with the label. He's made it abundantly clear that once his obligations had been fulfilled he would be going independent. This obligation? Three more albums. 2023 saw his re-emergence onto the stage with Quest For Fire, with Don't Get Too Close following a week after. 2/3 down.
Since the releases in 2023 he's ... read more
Big re-score after this became my favourite project out of 2023. Sunk so many hours listening to this project and spinning tunes like Archetype and Sisyphean in sets. May be Joe Armon-Jones' best work. There's a couple tracks here and there that could have maybe been trimmed to push this even further but as is... god what a brilliant album.
Vinyl came a day early. Threw the orange disc onto my record player expeditiously. Oh the press is CRISP!
This is another incredible release from Joe Armon-Jones, whose solo material keeps growing from strength to strength. First disc of the 2LP is just phenomenal from front to end. Brilliant performances and an intoxicating vibe that had me jamming out around my living room.
The second disc is where I feel like the project loses a little steam. "Danger Everywhere" is a quite nice ... read more
Glad to see a lot of Gali's back catalogue finally on streaming services. This release is a nice journey through his evolution. Although a handful of tracks here have already been available for a long time, having it all in one place is neat. There's a couple tracks here new to me - Roses featuring Alina Baraz is quite beautiful and definitely makes the argument that we need another Urban Flora type collaboration between the two. I will say I am disappointed in the version of Desert ... read more
I haven't really been listening to a lot of music casually this year, mainly mixing. But god was this just an incredible experience. Surprise highlight for me here was "Motorbike", it just sends shivers through my body I cannot get enough.
Saw then open with this in Manchester this year. Pretty rad tune. Might need a few more listens but it doesn't really have the same punch as it does live. I'll see if it grows on me with time.
They got rid of the "YES, OH MY- Hamdi" that's fucking criminal
Been waiting for this to drop for over a year. Incredibly happy it's finally here. My single most anticipated track does not disappoint. Kinda wish they kept some of the features of the older demo's but I'm just glad it's here.
Also I've heard rumours that the wrong version of this was distributed originally I don't know what's going on at Skrillex's camp but man they've gotta stop doing that.
Huh. They're back. Interesting.
This EP's pretty neat. Seeing Projekt Melody's name as a featured artist on "Flickering in the Gloom" was a bit of a jumpscare but it just sounds like washed out clips and snippets of her streams which honestly yeah I think I like that angle. Overall it's just a neat Atmospheric Drum and Bass EP, not a lot of takeaways from it outside of "Grinding of the Teeth" which is an abrasive banger that I dig a lot. I guess we'll see if a Part 2 ever ... read more
This album is strangely overlooked on here for some reason and I think a lot more people should know of it. Released end of 2014, the short lived Chicago-based Psychedelic Soul Sextet "Woo Park" put out a wonderfully mesmerising record with "Smokes". It's a beautiful, sonically silky project that has helped me relax during a lot of nights of sleeplessness. Although "Sex Jam" is the clear hook of the project for me being a track I've come back to so many times, the ... read more
