Iglooghost - Tidal Memory Exo
82

Listening to this album whilst watching the aurora over the UK was a pretty magical experience.

Can't tell if this is my favourite Iglooghost album yet but god it's good. That final leg is magical. I wasn't sold on the singles but with time this might grow deeper into the 80's. Alloy Flea, Nemat0de, Germ Chrism, Dewdrop Signal and Geo Sprite Exo are fantastic and may get thrown on loop a lot. I do have a huge soft spot for Lei Line Eon (especially as it has Sylph Fossil and I think that track ... read more

Shudan - Arctic Garms
71

So it would appear Shudan has a niche - absolute fuck off UK Dubstep and Grime production decorated with Pokemon samples, among other less frequent but notable gaming and anime samples. "TM13" (Ice Beam in generations 1 to 7) is the perfect encapsulation of this. Brutal bassline production using Pokeball opening noises as a snare, cutting in Pokemon Cries as bass reliefs, the classic Game Freak jingle from the Game Boy dropping in at a part, and the final drop with Pikachu being ... read more

Mr. Bill - Mechanomorphic
70

I'll be honest i think this is the weakest Mr. Bill project in a while. First 7 tracks just blend together to be a forgettable collection of one dimensional tracks. The second half of the album definitely picks things up in terms of track quality with tunes like "Stutter", "Subrioty", "Rewind", "Impeccable" and "Lie" and a lot of these highlights carry this project very far but there's a lot here I really don't care for. Nothing here is really ... read more

Various Artists - Peach Bits Vol. 3

Another serviceable grime instrumental collection. Warlord goes pretty hard. Untitled Riddim I want to give a special shoutout to for being simultaneously the hardest and goofiest tune I've heard in a while. The Pokemon cries, miscellaneous video game and anime samples cutting in between brutal bass stabs is very funny to me.

Four Tet - Three
73

After seeing Four Tet play live at Skrillex's epic 10 hour warehouse event in Manchester last November I told myself that I'd try to get into his music properly. I have very little exposure to his solo work outside of coming across his unusually titled side projects and going into this project I'm expecting pretty soft, comfortable and relaxed listening.

Comfy is what I got. Pleasant and impressive production work, parallels were forming in my head during the first two tracks to the more ... read more

NERO - Welcome Reality
83

One of the few Dubstep and Electro House projects from this era I can still come back to and thoroughly enjoy. Although production wise at times the hallmarks of what would become the sound of the early 2010's rings loud and true I wouldn't say that is a real detractor to this project. It's a project that really set the scene up and is an incredible release for its time whilst still being a record that even 13 years later you can come back to and get something out of it. It's a must listen EDM ... read more

DARKSIDE - Psychic
88

Thank you videogamedunkey for releasing the video "Relaxing Space Safari" on the 9th of December, 2014. Thanks to this video I was introduced to Metatron by DARKSIDE. I was immediately enamoured and rushed to listen to the album. Otherworldly stuff. A soul twisting and mesmerising experience, it's a project I get lost in time and time again. Love this record.

glass beach - plastic death
79

Not the usual thing I listen to but seeing it as a must hear piqued my interest alongside the pretty album art. I should definitely engage more with the community must hear's more because this was lovely! Definitely out of my comfort zone with this one - not really getting the rave reviews but this is quite wonderful! "coelacanth" is absolutely gorgeous and a track I feel I will go back to often. "commatose" is an epic of heavenly proportions and is another track I need to ... read more

Little Simz - Drop 7
58

Never been that into Simz' Drop EP Series. They're fun little experiments that never really hooked me. Drop 7 does not break this trend. Nothing here is straight up bad I'd say but at worst the ideas either don't come together as hoped or are too bare bones to really gauge properly. There's a couple fun tracks here, with Far Away being my favourite of this drop. But for the most part I Ain't Feelin It (omg he said the song title xdd so funy)

ZHA - Southampton Lengman
78

Brutal cut from Zha here. Devastating bass line and wonky Grime beat are coupled together with a menacing vocal choir synth sound. Proper rude track. Trends' Remix delves further into the foul bass turning the tune into a sub breaker. Carlos' Remix is a fun rhythmic switch-up that brings more texture to the original. Frampster's Remix brings the big brass into the fold turning it into a bit of a dark club banger. Overall a beast of a track with some fantastic support. Definitely check this one.

Eliminate - Get Off The Internet
65

I'm not all that familiar with Eliminate. I'm aware of the era that he came out of being the Brostep Arms Race of the early to mid 2010's. Being a Disciple signee I've always assumed that he's a one dimensional Bass Cannon deployer. I am however aware of his collab with PEEKABOO "Quickness" which was alright and his remix of "Laserbeam" is a blast in a live setting. So with his debut album dropping I thought I'd give it a go.

Immediately I notice that this is a deeper and ... read more

Little Simz - Stillness In Wonderland (Deluxe Edition)
85

This is a continuation of my Stillness in Wonderland review. If you want to know my thoughts on those tracks go check it out!

The deluxe tracks are wonderful. Beautiful production continues and is elevated to another level with the first track "Our Conversations". Backing by BADBADNOTGOOD this was always going to be an immediate hit for me. I love BBNG so to hear Simz just spit over all of that is an absolute treat. "Backseat" to "Phases" is a magnificent run of ... read more

Little Simz - Stillness in Wonderland
81

This album was my main introduction to Little Simz. First hearing her on the Gorillaz track "Garage Palace" I can't say I was impressed. Her flow was solid but the track itself I don't think played to her strenghts. That and I just don't think the song itself was that good. I never really went back to it and didn't think of it again.

Further exposure to her came later in 2017 when I saw Gorillaz live in Birmingham. Little Simz was opening that night. I decided to go in blind, only ... read more

Various Artists - Peach Bits Vol. 2
53

Another Grime Instrumental EP here from the label. Also another mixed bag in terms of quality. "Fidelity" is an incredibly boring beat with bland production. "Escape from Agrabah" is solid - I like the production but I feel it doesn't hit as hard as I want. If the beat was more aggressive on this one I could see it being bumped up quite a bit however I feel like the track has a lot going for it as is. It's a snappier track as well which helps out a lot. "Horror ... read more

Numa Crew - Infama
47

Title track is carried by vocal energy for me, the production sounds completely washed out. "Feeling Macaco VIP" has some fun energy to it. "Nobody Can Stop Us" sounds horrendous, with the occasional vocal loop that builds in being the only saving grace because I really like that vocal loop for some reason.

Various Artists - Peach Bits Vol. 1

Big up the Grime Instrumentals

This EP falls pretty flat for a listening experience. "Levels" is just okay. I'm not crazy about the production with the entire track just sounding really cheap and flat. "Bounty" lacks have the punch I'm wanting with really flimsy sounding percussion. Although a slight improvement over the previous track it's really nothing of note. "Screwface" although an obvious highlight for me here falls short of what even this era of Sorrow's ... read more

Culprate - Curious George VIP / B-Side
70

Early doors release from Culprate here, and the debut release for White Peach. "Curious George VIP" is actually really good. Pretty manic tune, the first minute of this track is disorientating. Once it gets going it turns into an absolute tune. "Bside" is a solid bass track although runs a bit one dimensional and slightly overstays its welcome but I'm still getting down with it.

FKJ - French Kiwi Juice
85

This is a very nostalgic album for me. I remember this coming out after falling in love with Lying Together and some of his early live performances like Losing My Way. All this time later and I still love this album. Although I fell out of style with his stuff after Ylang Ylang and never connected the same way with Vincent the same way I did with this album it's impossible to deny how incredible of an instrumentalist he is. This is distilled joy and tranquility.

As a side note if you haven't ... read more

The Future Sound Of London - Dead Cities
85

It's my birthday! So to celebrate I've decided to go to a group that was pretty formative to me growing up. I was considering reviewing some Trance compilations that I would listen to all the time as a wee kid, or maybe visit Lighthouse Family which was a duo that I apparently loved as a bab, or maybe even Daft Punk who's "Discovery" album was one that I rinsed until the CD was broken. Linkin Park's "Hybrid Theory" was another contender also, going through two whole CDs of ... read more

Kai Whiston - Quiet As Kept, F.O.G.
85

One of my favourite records from 2022, possibly my AOTY. A twisted echo of 90's UK Rave and New Age Traveller movements and a homage to his Mother, it's an album that resonated with me heavily. Carrier Signal is intoxicating and was a track that I rinsed pretty heavily when it first dropped. Between Lures, T.F.J. and 27-04-99 are stellar tracks also. The only two tracks I don't really enjoy coming back to are Lux 3 and 10-10-73. The former, although I enjoy the other two Lux tracks and usually ... read more

"@shymmy11 totally valid, I think releases like this really need to connect with you on a personal level and for me it's just not all that engaging. It's going to be a different experience for different folks at different times and others will likely get way more out of this than I did. I may give it another shot in the future but I don't expect to get much out of this on another listen right this moment."
