Earl Sweatshirt - Some Rap Songs
89

Upon my first listen, this project seemed all over the place. I liked a handful of the instrumentals, but the lyrics are what I really had to pause my listening to read through. After a couple of listens this album really clicked for me. It is meant to be all over the place. It is meant to represent what Earl had gone through the past couple years. Earl had been dealing with depression, substance abuse, and recently at the time of this album's release, his fathers death. Everything he writes ... read more

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magik
100

After nearly a decade of finding themselves as a band, the Red Hot Chili Peppers had finally found success at finding that missing chemistry resulting in creating a flawless record. This whole record is a display of every band member at their best. With John's ripping guitar solos and funky guitar riffs, Flea's funky bass lines, Chad's hard hitting drumming, and Anthony's vocal delivery and flow, the band has an unbreakable chemistry on this record. Rick Rubin's production is stellar with a ... read more

John Frusciante - Shadows Collide With People
82

Shadows Collide With People is a really experimental project combining elements of electronic music and alternative rock. As John experiments with this combination instrumentally, he writes about his past and looks back on his struggles, regrets, and his hope moving forward. He often approaches these themes with acceptance of his past. I enjoyed a handful of tracks on this project. I thought "Carvel" was one of the greatest album openers I've ever heard. The instrumental intro ... read more

Kanye West - The College Dropout
88

College Dropout is Kanye's big middle finger to all of the people who thought he couldn't make it. The whole concept of the album is shining light on the fact you don't have to follow the normal path of life in order to make it. Kanye writes in his lyrics and tells his story on how he made it as a rapper and is on his path to fame. His production on the album is very soulful and fresh with his own unique style. Personally, I think this album gets a little weak around the middle but really ... read more

MF DOOM - Operation: Doomsday
89

Operation Doomsday takes a debut album to a whole new perspective. DOOM uses his debut album almost as an origin story to his villainous character. The many superhero cartoon samples and skits tell a story on how DOOM was created and his plans to take over the world, which the world could be a metaphor for the rap industry. I really enjoy the whole LoFi atmosphere the production creates because it really gives the project a dark vibe just like a villain. DOOM's wordplay is very clever and ... read more

Mac DeMarco - 2
91

This whole album really displays carefree emotions and warm feelings. It's short, sweet, and simple. Mac's songwriting techniques are a real reflection of his easygoing personality which really shows in his music. At most times this album can be very psychedelic with its layers of jangly guitars and slowed down drum beats. Considering this project was all self-recorded in Mac's room with his own analog equipment, really is a show of how great of a musician he truly is. I really love this album ... read more

Earl Sweatshirt - Doris
84

Earl Sweatshirt is definitely one of the greatest lyricists of the decade. Straying away from edginess that most of the Odd Future members rap about, Earl tends to write down more meaningful rhymes dealing with topics such as his fathers abandonment or his experience with being sent away to a boarding school. The production on this project is very raw with a lot of eeriness which I enjoy. That eeriness really gives this album a enjoyable moody vibe. The features also are very well done on this ... read more

Radiohead - In Rainbows
100

To describe this album with one word, this album is magical. In Rainbows truly is a flawless album. This album takes you on a journey and is an experience listening to with all of the varieties of layered instrumentation. The melodies, drums, lyrics, and even artwork all comes together to paint the wonderful picture this album is meant to create. It is all very emotional to take in as expected from Radiohead. I personally think this project is one of the greatest albums of all time.
