I love this song so much. It builds on itself in such an effective way, without necessarily changing massively but not needing to. With each repetition you’re yes and-ing the previous bar, and building anticipation for the eventual release. By the time you reach the middle of song you’ve been hooked. It’s no trouble seeing why this is one of their most popular songs. My only qualm is that after doing all of this so masterfully, instead of a proper outro, there’s a fade ... read more

Here we are for my modern classics review series taking a closer look at a personal favorite of mines. A real unjustifiable award snub, and a crushing example of how real true, raw music is ignored by the mainstream. I am of course talking about the raw, emotional story about Black Death, wealth inequality, racial unity, and community solace, all backed by a dense g funk inspired beat. I of course talk about Gmcfosho’s 2013 banger “Miss My Ni”.
Rates lower for subject matter being “I wanna date you but you’re still in high schooool”
The guitar, from what I think is a synth, To BJ the Chicago Kid’s sung hook, this is song is lots and lots of fun. I really like it? Perhaps love it even?????
It’s not christmastime yet but:LIGHTSON IT MAY TAKE A WHILE BUT IM COMINHOMEEE UNLOCKTHEDOOR IM COMIN IM COMIN NO MATTER HOW FAAAR LEAVE THE LIGHTS ON IT MAY TAKE A WHILE BUT IM COMING HOME
Even though I rated this above it’s about time I promise I love black women please believe me
While some aspects feel just a Teeny bit wack, like how come they let snoop dogg have a whole ass song, this album is honestly my second favorite of theirs that I’ve heard aside from it’s about time. The production is great, and even tho by 97 new jack swing was out, it’s great to hear a version of SWV that’s so integrated with Hip-Hop again.
Great shit. Honestly besides this being a loving throwback to 70s soul and funk, there’s honestly just a lot of love and care put into each and every element of this album. From Booty’s narration, to the James Brown-ish guitar on “777” this album is a joy to listen to from top to bottom.
