Incubus - Make Yourself

OMFG I saw this album cover and immediately got memories of how much I loved Drive as a kid. My dumb city-ass thought it was the most American-country song ever because I knew nothing else modern to compare it to, and it was hilarious to listen to the whole album and get to Drive and remember how much I associated it with cowboys and horses and other junk when it sounds more on-par with something from The Red Hot Chili Peppers. Also girl, it's literally called Drive, why did it make me ... read more

Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin

WOW popularly a very beloved album, but controversially I think it's second after Physical Graffiti for being Led Zeppelin's best album. Babe I'm Gonna Leave You is genuinely one of my favorite songs ever, even though it's in a style of music I don't find myself enjoying very often. This whole album is great and a crazy way to start off the The New Yardbird's career.

Faves: Babe I'm Gonna Leave You; Dazed and Confused; How Many More Times

The Smiths - Meat Is Murder

Went in with a little bit of higher expectations because I already knew I loved Barbarism Begins At Home, but ended up not enjoying the entire album as much as I thought I would. One of the albums I feel that has a much stronger end than start.

Faves: Barbarism Begins At Home; Meat Is Murder (good sound but cheesy lyrics lol)

Beck - Sea Change
70

I like Beck, even back when I was a kid and thought he was just a Futurama OC, but this was never my favorite album by him. It's still really lovely, I just always liked the psychedelia-style rock of Odelay much more than the slow folk of Sea Change.

Faves: End of the Day

Elvis Costello - Brutal Youth

Awful, really didn't expect this from Elvis Costello, but I guess I can better understand why my dad never liked him. The first album from the list I didn't finish, made it half way.

The Associates - Sulk
35

Oh man, I really have a soft spot for 80's synthpop that was big in the gay scene, but this is genuinely pretty awful. The only song I found enjoyable is Love Hangover, which seems to only be on the deluxe album. Wish I liked Sulk more.

Faves: Love Hangover

U2 - The Joshua Tree
60

Ugh U2, these lists are always filled with stuff by these guys - Really not a huge U2 fan, but this is absolutely one of their best albums, between this and War. Even in my hater mindset, I have to admit The Joshua Tree is a fine album that has some pretty nice songs.

Faves: In God's Country

Manassas - Manassas

It's a good album, just not my favorite genre, but has two songs I really, really love. Worth checking those out at the very least.

Faves: Fallen Eagle; So Begins the Task

Jungle Brothers - Done by the Forces of Nature

REALLY liked this, a lot more than I thought I would. While not completely ignored, Jungle Brothers should be a group that's talked about more when talking about the golden age of East Coast Hip-Hop.

Faves: What U Waitin' 4; U Make Me Sweat; Acknowledge Your Own History; Tribe Vibes

Green Day - American Idiot
65

I like the message, fuck George Bush Jr. and all the shit that happened in the early 2000's because of him, but the album really doesn't go that deep into the message it wants to make. The genre of music, Pop Punk, is also a little too 'theatre kid' to me for lack of my own knowledge for a better word lol, never been a fan of Rock Opera to be fair... I like some of the songs off this album, but I don't know if that's more because of nostalgia because there's ... read more

Adam and the Ants - Kings of the Wild Frontier

AWESOME New Wave album!! I'm a bit biased going into this album while doing 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die as I'm a diehard New Wave fan (it's the best mixture of punk and pop to me personally lol) and am already a huge Adam Ant fan, how can you not love someone who makes their shtick dressing like a pirate!? Love Adam Ant, love New Wave, and I love this album.

Faves: Antmusic, Los Rancheros, Ants Invasion

Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker

A nice country album, with strong writing and some soothing tunes. Sucks to find out after listening that the singer seems to be a bit of an asshat.

Faves: Oh My Sweet Carolina

The Temptations - All Directions
75

Not the best of all time from The Temptations, but still solid. Papa was a Rolling Stone is definitely the strongest song on the album, and is the reason I imagine it got the full album on the list of 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. Quality soul and funk.

Faves: Funky Music Sho Nuff Turns Me On; Papa Was a Rolling Stone

Van Halen - Van Halen

This album has some Dad Rock songs I can actually kinda fuck with. Hard Rock from the 70's (aka prime Dad Rock material) is usually not my favorite, but this as a whole album is pretty alright. I could dig listening to this with some drunk boomers.

Faves: Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love; Little Dreamer

Neil Young - After the Gold Rush
90

One of Neil Young's best, if not his best (though I am generic and like Harvest the most). A great album choice to introduce someone to Neil Young's music.

Faves: All of them, but the fave of my faves are: Only Love Can Break Your Heart; Southern Man

Crowded House - Woodface

Eh... I mean it's not offensively awful to my ears or anything but it's just a bit meh... Forgettable kinda generic pop rock for me, sorry!

Some peak folk rock. A great album to show the best of the genre from the late 60's.

Too corny for me, but the album is very self-aware lol. The fish rapping underwater was funny.

Atari Teenage Riot - 1995

Very, very strong start with a very, very weak second half.

Blümchen - Verliebt...
85

Deadass might be the best album I've ever under the Bubblegum Dance genre - didn't know EVERY song on an album of this genre could keep going so hard. Of course, Bubblegum Dance suffers from it being a bit difficult to differentiate itself from other songs in the genre, with a lot of the songs going hard but still being a bit too similar to enjoy a full album's worth. I had this issue with Smile, Bambee, Toy-Box, and Aqua, but Blümchen is an entire hour's worth of ... read more
