my bloody valentine - m b v
65

I mean, Loveless was always going to be a tough act to have to follow, especially 12 years later, but there were definitely some choices made, like adding a random recorder that sounds straight out of a 3rd-grade music classroom to some songs. Not for me.

Faves: None individually, but all together it's fine, I guess.

David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars
95

David Bowie, enthralled by the New York Dolls' mix of hard rock and glittery drag, returned to England to make a genre and gender-defying album that reveled him a musical genius on the same level as Beethoven or Chuck Berry.

Faves: All of it, genuinely too hard to pick a handful of favorites.

Calexico - Feast of Wire
75

Music doesn't fit the cover art's vibe at all, but I'm honestly kind of thankful for that lmao.

Faves: Quattro, Close Behind

Bruce Springsteen - Darkness on the Edge of Town
75

Not the biggest Springsteen fan, but he really shows off his voice well here.

Faves: None, sorry - said I wasn't the biggest fan!

6/1089 of 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die

Stevie Wonder - Talking Book
85

Stevie Wonder is one of the most respected and beloved artists of all time ever, and I still would argue that he's not appreciated enough.

Faves: You Are the Sunshine of My Life, Maybe Your Baby, Superstition

5/1089 of 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die

Television - Marquee Moon
85

Television is like the weird artsy little-sister of Punk that is arguably cooler than even her big sister, that I eventually get an obsessive and definitely normal crush over.

Faves: Torn Curtain

Men Without Hats - Rhythm of Youth
85

See, if your brain is massively wrinkly and pulsating like mine is, you'll realize that The Safety Dance is in fact the worst song on this album, and I Like and Things in My Life are the true peak.

Duke Ellington - Ellington at Newport
70

Yo, can't believe the ghost from Big Mouth got his own album. Nah, for real Duke Ellington is an insane inspiration to so much of modern music and he really had the talent to deserve all the hype he still gets. Ellington at Newport is a good choice if you want a quick peek at some of his work.

Faves: Jeep's Blues

Nick Drake - Pink Moon
80

One of the rawest albums ever made, and people today will rightfully not let you forget about it. A very emotional and intimate final album for Nick Drake.

Faves: Pink Moon, Place to Be, Things Behind the Sun, & From the Morning

The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced (Deluxe Version)
85

The psychedelic album of all time to me, no I will not debate it. Jimi Hendrix was a living god.

Faves: All of it, but especially Hey Joe & Purple Haze

King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King
95

One of those albums you see internet music nerds never shut up about, but its for a GOOD FUCKING REASON!!!

Faves: All of it, but specially 21st Schizoid Man, of course.

87/1089 of 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die

Scritti Politti - Cupid & Psyche 85
50

Aww… they want to be Michael Jackson so bad.

Faves: None

Bruce Springsteen - The Rising
80

Brooooo, I always found Bruce Springsteen so overrated, but then I sit down and actually listen to his shit and see he's a guy who obviously has his base in Heartland Rock, but is really open to experimenting with different genres a bit in order to keep his albums pretty distinct from one another. I think this is my favorite album by him, and having done these big album list things for a bit, I've had to listen to a LOT of Bruce Springsteen lol, and thankfully I found this a pleasant ... read more

Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory
70

A classic for people my age at this point, and like, don't get me wrong, Hybrid Theory is really fun, but it's also sooooooo fucking cheesy. Very much angry suburban teen music, but Nu Metal in general always makes me feel that. Again, it's still a fun album, but similar to American Idiot, I'm going to enjoy the album for mostly nostalgia.

Faves: Cure For the Itch

Michael Kiwanuka - Kiwanuka
95

Wow now this is why I like doing these lists, because it really helps me broaden my music tastes and find some stuff I never would have listened to before! Kiwanuka is a really fun and catchy album, and might be one of my favorites that I've discovered so far. I love 70's psychedelic soul and this is a wonderful love letter to it, with a slight modern twist.

Faves: You Ain't the Problem, Rolling, Living in Denial, Hero, Final Days

Jeff Beck - Truth
75

I mostly only really knew Jeff Beck by name than his actual work, so it was nice to sit down and actually listen to an album. His type of music (Hard Rock, etc) isn't my favorite, but he clearly has some good influence on metal as a genre.

Faves: Beck's Bolero

83/1089 of 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die

Sonic Youth - Goo
85

Another banger by Sonic Youth, but it'll be hard to top Daydream Nation for me.

Faves: Tunic & Mote

82/1089 of 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die

Buena Vista Social Club - Buena Vista Social Club
95

Amazing - an album everyone needs to listen to at least once in their life.

Faves: Chan Chan, El Cuarto de Tula, Candela, Buena Vista Social Club

81/1089 of 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die

Public Image Ltd. - Public Image (First Issue)

I dig the Image, but the Sound still needs some working, Johnny Rotten.

Faves: Public Image

73/1089 of 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die

Fleetwood Mac - Tusk
65

Oof, I remember thinking this album was a lot better than I remember, but I think I just really, really like the title song. There's a handful of other good songs, but the album is so bloated it's easy to miss them.

Faves: The Ledge; Sara; Brown Eyes; Tusk
