My first listen of swans during their "big sound" era, and holy shit it's amazing. It's so grand and epic sounding.
it's crazy that a seventeen year old heroin addict could produce something so grandiose. The voice does sound like a dying chicken though.
My favourite dark throne, and maybe black metal, record by far.
This album, while being one of the best bm albums of all time, is, in my opinion the worst album in the "Unholy trinity" of darkthrone albums (A blaze in the Northern Sky, Under a Funeral Moon, Transilvanian Hunger). But still it's a great record. Darkthrone have abandoned their blackened death metal style from "A blaze in the Northern Sky" and have completely transformed into a bm band! Pros: The atmosphere Darkthrone create is immaculate! The shredding guitars and the pounding drums combined with the raw screaming vocals and the lo fi production makes this album sound mesmerizing. It really makes your mind travel to the snowy and harsh mountains of Norway!
Cons: While the repetitive riffs add plenty to the atmosphere they do get boring after a bit :/
