quick thoughts: the thing that holds this back for me is something about the sonic palette. the guitars don't feel like they have much punch, so it ends up sounding like drums and vocals with just a faint background of chugs or the occasional texture. i do enjoy most of the songs, but i won't find myself coming back to much.
this is my shit. these guitars are so fuzzy and airy, and the vocals perfectly ride *just* underneath. i didnt catch the lyrics very well, but the entire thing bangs so much.
quick thoughts: liam mccay comes through with essentially a 37 minute long song that hurts and heals at the same time. the lack of variation in key and chord progression holds it back for sure, but at the same time it's precisely the reason it reaches deep into your soul. motifs are repeated throughout the album to great effect, mainly the strumming pattern and arpeggiation of "Bleed", giving this sense of, well, bleeding out slowly throughout the album. the interludes here ... read more
i'm stunned.
sometimes, i sit back and think about why art isn't put out into the world. for fear of criticism, surely. possibly because of a personal thought that it's bad. sometimes because the artists get obsessed with a new idea and forget about the old. all of these are valid.
and for the life of me, i can't figure out why this one wasn't released, or at the very least why mcr lied about its state.
this album is, clearly, salvageable. it's clearly something ... read more
this has been talked to death but i kinda enjoy it, it's cute and fun. "Matilda" and "As It Was" and "Keep Driving" are genuinely amazing songs though.
quick thoughts: JID is one of the greatest and i'm tired of people shitting on this album because it's not TFS 2, because it's not as conceptual, or because it's simply different feeling than his other work. it's still deep, complex, and full of lyrical gems, flows you could find from a volcano, and incredible beats that complement every verse, from features to JID himself. it's not as good as TFS, but not much will be.
bro he sounds a lot like ché on this album and it's pissing me off but he's doing well ig
quick thoughts: i heard it today. it's blonde. its incredible. i started getting goosebumps when futura free played. it feels like a piece of music that always has and always should have existed. it's so timeless. it's so minimal and beautiful and intricately created and moody and poignant. there's not a weak part of this record.
vocals are way too quiet and they don't sound that distinct/confident for the bars being dropped, there's definitely something here especially with the beat but it's very rough.
quick thoughts: i love how relentlessly fun jvb always manages to be but i also love how much more mature this album (including deluxe) is. such an interesting artistic statement. also, "changes" sampling porter robinson is INCREDIBLE
i wasnt sure for like a minute or so and then the track started to breathe and holy fuck the lyrics and the emotion are so EXPANSIVE
quick thoughts: i'm actually so proud of keem here, this entire album is pretty personal and distinct. i love how we get pieces of his upbringing in mildly nonlinear ways throughout random bars and sometimes more focused tracks, like how he said he doesn't trust his uncle then gave us more info about that on "Circus Circus freestyle". all of the instrumentals compliment their respective tracks smoothly and keem really shows a lot of lyrical and technical ability. he's ... read more
you're gonna miss it all.
a perfect title for this album. like truly, what other name would fit lines like "i'm guilty as charged for leading you on // a lie that I know is easy to see // but it's crucial to blot out any // signs that I might have feelings", and the other amped, pissed-off-at-myself parts of the intro "Fine, Great"? what other phrase could match the mistakes of "The Old Gospel Choir", where the dichotomy between the first and second ... read more
its a little too generic instrumentally, but lyrically and vocally gerard really does sound downtrodden.
a drag path. etched in the surface.
haunting lyrics and a somber tone make this one of tyler and josh's true best songs, even if the original had better qualities in some respects.
