A solid album with a couple of standouts but not one I think I'd come back to often. It is more interesting lyrically than musically and so doesn't leave as much of a lasting impression as it could.
The haunting soundscapes of "The Mantle" were my introduction to the atmospheric black metal genre, and it is a high water mark for the genre. The album combines bleak and desolate atmospheres with epic moments of emotion that come surging through the layered guitars. The dynamic and textural depth of the album is excellent with the blending of acoustic & distorted guitars, clean & growled vocals. A great listen for those interested in black-, post-, or folk metal.
This album represents to me the peak of Metallica's musical development, after which they simplified things for the black album. A strong album from start to finish with many timeless classics like "Blackened", "One", and "And Justice for All". This album contains some of the peak 80s thrash metal riffage with melodic and memorable solos to boot. One of the best.
Raw, Emotional, Desperate, Chaotic. This EP stands out in a sea of modern hardcore.
