In the aftershock of the fever dream that was A Broken Frame, Alan Wilder joins in for this album, continuing their experimentation, and beginning a short industrial phase. While they still were not completely in their element, this album marks a large step in the right direction.

In the aftershocks of Vince Clarke's departure, this album comes as an attempt for the rest of the band to get their own sound, and for Martin Gore to show off his own songwriting talents. Even though it is still an okay album, it is definitely the weakest studio album in their discography.
"Leave In Silence" opens the album with something that sounds somewhat similar to their later work, but with the early-80s synthpop sound on top of it.

"New Life" is a solid song that sets the tone for what the rest will sound like.
"I Sometimes Wish I Was Dead" is a track that doesn't stand out too much, but fits into the puzzle of this album.
"Puppets" could almost be considered a slight foreshadowing as to what was to come, with a seemingly darker tone than the other songs on the album.
