Gore's lyrics sometimes veer on the facile, but David Gahan's singing comes more clearly to the fore throughout -- things aren't all there yet, but they were definitely starting to get close.

No-one is quite sure why Vince Clarke left DM - not even Clarke - but Gore thinks their rejection of one or more of his second batch of songs was part of it. Gore's efforts to step into the break ... were mixed.

I definitely hear the dated/cheesy criticism a lot more on this record than their debut. Most of these tracks are technically produced well but really do sound hella dated through today’s lens. That closer is rad tho

“A Broken Frame” is certainly a slump for Depeche Mode, it’s not completely horrible but I do think it can get fairly bad at times. The atmosphere is darker and purposely more downbeat, this makes for a boring and utterly drab album since they don’t really have a basis to perpetuate the darkness, it feels like listening to the happiest men on earth experience sadness for the first time.
