So, I've been trying to get into Waits on and off for about 2 years now. I realize this will be heresy to fans, but I have had a difficult time with his voice. I have listened to tracks off Closing Time, Saturday Night, Swordfishtrombones, and Rain Dogs, along with a few singles off later albums and a handful of extremely captivating live performances. While I've always found the stuff enjoyable, it also doesn't resonate in the same way as many other singer songwriters I love.
This evening I ... read more
(Goddamn, this might be my favorite album of 2023)
Relistened recently and to me nowadays there are highs and lows to the album
Bit of a step down (to me that is) when compared to TDS, mainly because the cohesion is lost in favor of just fantastic songs. But what songs these are. Trent, thanks for all the angst, I needed it when I was a teenager!!
Absolutely brutal and disgusting. 9.9999/10, would cum again. Hurt in context of the record is one of the singular greatest musical achievements of the past hundred years and anyone who says Cash's version is better is sadly incorrect:)
Raw as hell, drags a bit towards the end. Makes me want to dance
This record has more droning than I generally like in my music, but the New Mind by ITSELF makes this an 80 for me lol
This album changed my life for the better and the worse, and King's Crossing is my favorite Elliott Smith song. Rest in peace, I wish I could have seen you play live once
Oddly this is my least favorite record by him. I love every song still, but it's missing some of the bite of anger that shades every other record, Easy Way Out is my favorite track here
Elliott Smith is my favorite artist nowadays, and this record opened my eyes to his genius
My intro to his work, very well put together and the story is incredibly sad.
Saw someone on twitter complaining about the album art for this, and I just wanna say I think the art is fantastic.
