With flute, oboe, and strings adding further texturing to the often quite lovely songs created by the band, Children remains perhaps the key album of Swans' career -- the clear signpost towards their ever-more ambitious albums in the future.

Children of God, one of the band's strongest releases, established Gira as an Old Testament tyrant obsessed with the nature of love, human frailty, and the midnight beauty of black orchids.

fucking christ, Children of God hit me like a goddamn truck. after being generally lukewarm on every Swans record before this one, i was anxious to listen. i knew coming in that it was highly regarded in their catalog, with deep cuts calling it possibly their best work, but i was still a little nervous. their darker, more gothic sound hasn't really resonated with me too much up until now, and i know this is similar, so would it really work?

yeah. fuck yeah wow. this album is amazing.

This is probably Swans' darkest album so far. The song Beautiful Child has some of the darkest lyrics I've heard, I got goosebumps from it. I didn't really expect anything going into this album. Swans' last 4 albums haven't been that good so, I was expecting it to be bad since it's sort of the same style (noise rock) but, this was surprisingly good! This was the first album Swans started to go with the folk/gothic rock sound. I personally like their newer post-rock sound but, I think this folk ... read more

Swans is a band that I've started to really enjoy this year. Sure, I have heard the acclaim of The Seer and To Be Kind when they came out and even downloaded them onto my iPod those years they were released. However, I was intimidated by the album lengths for both projects. I could not bear the length of those projects at first and thus I would write them off. Furthermore, the band was a giant enigma to me. I didn't realize that they've been going at it since the 80s. Everyone was saying that ... read more

NEXT UP IN THE SWANS DISCOGRAPHY WE HAVE WHAT IS CONSIDERED ONE OF THEIR BEST, and oh boy is it.

This album is amazing honestly, it's quite a big change of pace from their previous albums but it's very welcome, while you can still find aspects of their previous works here, Children of God sets out to change their image a little, this could've failed horribly, but luckily it did not, because this album is amazing.

To start with, we have the very sudden and intense opener, New Mind, this song ... read more

Probably one of my favorite Swans release I've listened to so far. Coupled with the World of Skin bundle, this is even better. The heavy tone of this record mixes well with the atmospheric and visceral experience of the aforementioned. Truly outstanding.
