With flute, oboe, and strings adding further texturing to the often quite lovely songs created by the band, Children remains perhaps the key album of Swans' career -- the clear signpost towards their ever-more ambitious albums in the future.
There's also a bit more rhythm on Children of God, but the big news is that the Swans have begun to shift dynamics occasionally, making it easier to tell the songs apart, but no easier to listen to them.
Oh boy, my favorite folk album.
I fucking loved this. A gothic, folky, love filled beating that was wondrous from start to finish. The switch from Holy Money to this is extremely impressive to say the lest. It's a more accessible, much less experimental, yet still adventurous and interesting. Swans sort of ditch their No Wave sound and style on this album, and to be honest, I think this album benefits so damn much from that shift in style. The sound of this album is very different, with most tracks going for more of a folk inspired take. I also think Giras writing improves drastically on here, with many tracks being more terrifying and dreadful than most of anything off of their last 3 albums.
