Gira still had so much to accomplish with Swans, from proto-pigfucker to slick goth-pop to nihilistic drone to his current symphonies of cosmic transgression and dread. But with Filth, he opened up the Earth with his teeth, blackened and bloody, ready to begin.

A ferocity that overcomes the unavoidable thinness of the no-budget production.
Norman Westberg's guitar work has a definite power to it, and occasional studio manipulations like the chopped-up/sped-up "Freak" keep things interesting, but by the end it all gets a bit much. In small doses, though, it's great, and early Swans really is like little else on the planet before or since.

This is it folks. I had to stop it multiple times because I was about to break down in tears. This might be the new 'heaviest' album to beat. And I do mean beat.

I also hate Noise Rock so I wasn't expecting to like this album but, with everyone giving this such a high rating, I thought it would be a Noise Rock album I would like. I do appreciate the songs not being 40 minutes long compared to ... read more
