I've been a huge St. Vincent fan for a long time and I was really looking forward to this album. I do feel a little bit bamboozled by the singles because I really thought the whole album was going to have more of a heavy industrial vibe. I love this band so much. I feel like they have two modes: sleepy dreamy mode and funky sexy mode. They do both really well but I prefer their more mellow sound. Cinema leaned more into their funky upbeat mode which is why it didn't really click with me as much. This, however, is my shit. I had never heard of Cindy Lee before this album, and I listened to it the morning it came out, which also happened to be the morning after I performed in drag for the first time. Finding out that Cindy Lee was a drag persona felt really serendipitous and surreal, like I was meant to hear this when I did.
