Big Thief burst on to the Indie Folk scene with this great little aptly-titled album. Personally, I'm a much greater fan of the instrumentally lush output as Big Thief as opposed to Adrianne's far more subdued solo work (as great as that still is), so I was definitely a fan of "Masterpiece"
I mean the songs do sound pretty good, but I feel like Peggy could have been replaced with any number of people without really making much of a difference. He wasn't really utilized all that highly, so it just sort of sounds like a Flume EP
Some incrEDIBLY solid Indie Rock and Pop fused with some Alt-Country that sounds reminiscent of a group like Mazzy Star
I can't really give any lower of a rating because I KNOW that there isn't anything wrong with this album, but at the same time it just didn't really grab me in any significant way even after a couple listens. It's pretty, but not enough so that I really felt much of a strong draw
Not too often do you get treated to a Post-Grunge Rock Opera, but "Jagged Little Pill" fills that niche. Opinions on Morisettes voice might be divided, but I personally love it and how expressive it can be. You really forget how many incredibly iconic songs this album houses until you listen, from classics like You Oughta Know and Ironic to Hand in my Pocket and Head Over Feet
some pretty good songs that are there and gone before you even realize
There's some nice dance beats on here. They aren't particularly noteworthy, but they're not bad. Vocals, on the other hand, grate quite hard. My first impression of this album was "TOO BAD" with Anderson .paak which is actually pretty good so I thought "how bad could it be" to which the answer was "pretty bad"
With half the length, "Siamese Dream" manages to cut out all of the bloat that makes Melon Collie a bit cumbersome to get through. The track list is great throughout, and the album really defined a sound blending Grungy Rock with Shoegaze
Goes to a LOT of different places and most of em are pretty good. I can respect what is essentially one behemoth song that manages to shift and evolve into a variety of sounds and textures and feelings, even if some of the noise elements verged on being a bit too much for me
Normally, the Screamo vocals would be a major turn-off for me. They still ARE to a small degree, but the unrelenting onslaught of Deafheaven's "Sunbather" probably wouldn't work with much less.
Similar to most Metal I've listened to, the vocals are the biggest detractor of otherwise good instrumentals. These instrumentals are more than good, though; They're amazing. The blend of distortion and rage with these gliding sounds creates a super distinct feel that comes ... read more
Definitely one of the better Hip Hop albums I've heard in a while. Not only are most of the beats pretty killer, but almost every bar feels like some poignant statement. Very tragic how incredibly talented Steez was to die at such a young age
Who woulda thought that the minds behind one of the greatest Shoegaze albums ever can also make some really nice Alternative Country music?
I think my enjoyment of this album sort of swung on a pendulum between very high and sort of apathetic. I adore the dreamy feel of a song like "Wivenhoe Bells (II)" or "Only a Shadow," but some of the other slower stretches felt a little more cumbersome to get through
Gary Numan wasn't the absolute first to do Synthpop or New Wave, but an early instance for sure and a pretty successful one at that
In all honesty, I'm more of a fan of Talk Talk's earlier "Spirit of Eden" album. I do think that "Laughing Stock" has some great instrumentals, but some of the songs feel a bit too minimalist for my personal tastes
Literally sounds like self-parody of itself. The instrumentals sound exactly the same, and the drowned out vocals are almost laughably impossible to hear. I really don't want to rip into a young person's deeply personal lyrics, but the writing is super bare bones and eye-rolling; very "Bart Simpson vapourwave edit-"core
I'm not gonna sit here and posture like I'm an enlightened being that fully understands this album, BUT I can absolutely appreciate it. Behind all the bizarre lyrics, spoken word segments, and chaotic instrumentals is genuine musical talent and artistic merit.
All that being said, "Trout Mask Replica" is also an absolute slog to get through. The hour and 18 minute runtime feels more like 3 hours, and pure enjoyment really only came through in waves. The intent of the album ... read more
At it's very best I do think the album delivers, but most of the tracklist unfortunately fails to make much of a lasting impression on me. I'm glad to see smaller and talented artists see success, but this one just might not be all that for me
