Jeff Rosenstock - HELLMODE
75

I enjoyed the noisy punk direction taken on 'Hellmode,' even if it sort of lost steam and edge towards the later half of the album. Despite that, still a good time, with some fun writing and performances

Ethel Cain - Preacher's Daughter
83

A deep exploration of how isolation and sadness can be exploited, putting people in harmful relationships.

Giving a more in-depth listen definitely altered my perception of the album a fair bit. The concept angle of "Preacher's Daughter" really does a lot, turning what would be sad and wistful songs into truly heartbreaking and gut-wrenching ones. Hayden's voice is also truly incredible

The Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
76

Lot of good stuff going on here, from the fusion of genres and tone to the vocals that surprisingly didn't bother me as much as they maybe should have. Despite these things, I just wasn't fully invested through the the entirety of Mellon Collie's VERY lengthy runtime. Most of the music was quite good, but not too much stood out to me amongst a bevy of sounds and ideas

Wilco - Schmilco
72

Overshadowed by how silly the album cover is

Jockstrap - I Love You Jennifer B
91

When you listen to enough different or "alternative" stuff, it begins to get harder and harder for things to really stick out as being really "weird" so to speak. I've heard far more out-there music before, but something about the really quirky production layered with vocals you'd expect from some Bedroom Pop gave me a unique listen that I thoroughly enjoyed

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - 12 Bar Bruise
73

For a debut full length album, I don't think it's bad at all. It sounds amateurish and a little messy, but it's catchy and has a BEAUTIFUL cover art which doesn't make me like the album any more, but I felt like pointing out

Black Country, New Road - Ants From Up There
95

One of the many things that makes Ants From Up There so amazing is that it overcomes a hurdle I find prevents me from getting into a lot of "sad" albums; The fact that they can be so boooooooring. I completely get that lyrics are the driving force behind these more emotional and intimate songs, but nothing puts me to sleep faster than a song that's just a person singing softly set to nothing but an acoustic guitar.

Black Country, New Road faces none of these problems. Every one of ... read more

The Strokes - Room on Fire
68

No matter how hard I try to get into it, I just can't, really. at about 4 or so songs in, I just sort of mentally tap out

81

This dude is out here creating whole avant jazz pieces as rap beats

NEGATIVE XP - Mkultra Support Group, Vol. 1
17

Truly just devoid of any substance or quality. It's whiny, bitter, and the pathetic projection of insecurity. The whole thing needs to be steeped with an obnoxious voice filter to cover for the fact that the singer has no talent, and i'd call the generic garage rock instrumentals "dime-a-dozen" but at least dimes have actual monetary value

The Who - Tommy
85

I watched another performance of the Tommy musical today, and it reminded me how great this album is. I do believe that it works better as a musical story, being able to see all the characters portrayed by unique actors with unique takes.

'Tommy' is about a lot of things. It's about coping with trauma, the power of music, and the perils of celebrity worship. The flow from song to song works so well, and each and every song has a catchy hook, which brings out a lot of memorable tracks

Japanese Breakfast - Psychopomp
75

The length of a nice walk, and perfect for listening to on a nice walk

Standing On The Corner - Standing On The Corner
83

Edit: 65-->83

Edit: Okay, I get it now

Feels like a bit of style over substance, and I don't think the novelty of the style really stays fresh all that long

M.I.A. - Kala
82

I think I made a mistake first listening to this during the winter, because this is the opposite of a winter album. M.I.A.'s Kala is lively, percussion heavy, and concerned first and foremost with getting you to move.

The production is this utterly unique and compellingly impressive blend of traditional drums and electronic House that really just commands attention

The Beatles - The Beatles
83

Cracking my fingers in anticipation ready to crank out another "The Beatles were so ahead of their time" review. In all honesty, this one didn't hit quite as hard as their other works. The Beatles' self-titled is very expansive, and I think that they broadly made good use of the expanded runtime.

The feeling of the songs goes through a lot of peaks and valleys, from the more energetic songs like Back In the U.S.S.R. and Helter Skelter, to the more mellow songs that make up ... read more

PARTYOF2 - i was mature for my age, but i was still a child
82

I'm not sure who the lady leaving a voicemail at the end of the last song is, but she's right. I feel like 'grouptherapy' really has some potential for a mainstay artist in the experimental hip hop/R&B scene. Too bad this album flew under my radar during the actual year it released, because it for sure could have found it's place in one of my tops spots of 2023

Gorillaz - Gorillaz
77

Gorillaz' self-titled sits in a weird place for me. When I think of the sound of Gorillaz' self-titled, I can so perfectly imagine that sound and vibe. Despite this, I don't find that a bulk of the songs really stick in my mind all that well.

Here more than ever, Gorillaz sounds like an actual band with members who play specific instruments. The unpolished feel gives it a sense of personality, but also works to the albums detriment to an extent. Beyond anything else, the album ... read more

OutKast - ATLiens
86

Best album with the stinkiest album cover. While I don't quite think ATLiens hit the highest highs that Stankonia did, I think that ATLiens is the overall more consistent set of songs.

The sort of retro-spacey aesthetic is really endearing to me, which helps sell the personality of Andre and Big Boi's (as per usual) charisma-filled performances

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Float Along – Fill Your Lungs
78

Over time, i've learned that Australian Psychedelic Rock has a distinct sound, and it sounds exactly like this

81

I ain't got much to say. Yes it's definitely "goofy silly quirky" but the more I listen, the musical chops really show themselves on this album
