There is a quality to Noah’s voice that is absolutely haunting. That is really the driving force behind what makes this album so magical, how haunted she sounds.
From album opener ‘Noah’, to ‘I Burned LA Down’ this is truly a gorgeous execution of her idea. I just wish it was a bit less country.
This album, while it has some really strong songs, seems more like a compilation of songs than an album. I don’t feel as if it was thought out at all, it’s sonically and lyrically all over the place, and a lot of the songs are just weak points in her discography. However with that being said, it cannot be ignored that some of her best songs are on this project.
With ‘Dealer’, ‘Wildflower Wildfire’, ‘Thunder and ‘Sweet Carolina’ being ... read more
This mixtape absolutely shows growth for Twigs. A lot of the tracks took a while to grow on me, but this mixtape has aged like WINE for me at least. Truly a classic, even the interludes going down in history. Twigs absolutely needs to work with Arca more!! Thank You Song is absolutely stunning :)))
An incredibly honest album, unfortunately the songs just lack the replay value.
This album screamed at me to love it. Unfortunately, the music just didn’t match up to the hype/aesthetics and it fell short for me.
Songs like ‘Violet Chemistry’ and ‘Handstand’ are arguably career bests for Miley, but the album really just doesn’t have much replay value, and it could have benefitted from some sonic cohesivity.
‘Honey’ is a true magnum opus for Samia. Reaching heights she was not previously able to reach.
Produced mostly with Caleb Wright of Normal Parents, the record is a coming of age record for Samia, and that comes off wonderfully. Dealing with sensitive topics such as addiction, sexual assault and anxiety, Samia writes with the wisdom of someone far beyond her years.
With album highlights such as ‘Mad at Me’, ‘Dream Song’ and deadpan opener ‘Kill Her ... read more
Kali Uchis is a self admitted perfectionist. Unfortunately, that doesn’t come off in this album at all.
‘Red Moon in Venus’ is an incredibly strong effort from the singer, don’t get me wrong. The album contains some of her career bests, such as ‘Moonlight’, ‘Endlessly’ or even ‘Moral Conscience’ showing that she has depth in her writing and vocals and a serious ear for a hit.
Unfortunately, there is a significant chunk of this album ... read more
‘Desire…’ is the opposite of a sophomore slump. Discovering a lighter, maybe more tropical sound palette was a genius move for Polachek. With songs like ‘Smoke’, ‘Welcome to my Island’ and ‘Sunset’ proving that her voice is best fit for summer anthems.
‘PORTALS’ is to me, a complete reinvention of the character Martinez has been building the past 7 years. With an edgier kick to songs like ‘VOID’, ‘EVIL’ and ‘DEATH’, they almost leave the pastel, soft, child-like aesthetic in the past, and seem to move onto bigger and better things. I cannot imagine her next album not reaching a peak she’s never reached.
SZA’s ‘SOS’ has been regarded by many as a career highlight. Many believe it’s a sophomore slump as well. I don’t believe there is another artist who could divide the public like SZA does. Now whether that’s a product of her scarcity, I’m not sure. But I can tell you one thing, she did not dissapoint with ‘SOS’
Now, to follow up one of the most critically regarded R&B albums in history (CTRL) must have not been an easy task. But SZA ... read more
I think I fear labelling albums as ‘Magnum Opuses’ or even just hailing them as a perfect body of work. But Bridgers’ sophomore effort is one of the closest things to perfect in the 2020’s decade that I can think of.
Starting off with lead single “Garden Song”, Bridgers seems to move into a lighter sound than her debut. Following up with the infamous song about her now deceased father “Kyoto”, Bridgers is not only putting out far more interesting ... read more
Rosalìa’s “Motomami” is quite possibly one of the keystone albums of the 2020 decade. With low tempo, quieter songs on the ‘Mami’ side like ‘CANDY’ or ‘COMO UN G’ you can truly listen to “MOTOMAMI” in any setting. Weather it be in the clubs with ‘LA COMBI VERSACE’ or you’re crying alone in your room to “G3 N15”, “MOTOMAMI” has a ‘MOTO’-mood for everyone.
If Shygirls last project ‘ALIAS’ was considered a “night out”, then ‘Nymph’ is the dawn, the morning after a crazy night out with your friends.
‘Woe’ starts the album off with a bang, a trance like anthem that samples Caroline Polachek’s 2021 hit ‘Bunny Is a Rider’, Shygirl addresses the audience, and shows off her bravado and trademark swagger.
Other album highlights including Arca produced ‘Come for me’, the ... read more
With ‘Playgirl’ Lolo Zouai attempts to create a cohesive, futuristic utopia landscape for her listeners. Instead, she created a mish-mash of highs and lows.
On ‘Crazy Sexy Dream Girl’ (a highlight) she sings about boy troubles and partying, both themes very prominent through the album, but she manages to keep the tone, instrumental and vocal production fresh and fun. Guaranteed to pull the listener in for more.
But on later songs such as ‘Open the Door’ or ... read more
‘Dirt Femme’ is Tove Lo’s first independent album (Released under her Pretty Swede imprint) but you wouldn’t be able to tell. ‘Dirt Femme’ is filled with high quality melodies, anthemic instrumentals, and Tove’s versatile voice floating above the songs.
Opening up with one of the strongest songs on the record ‘No One Dies From Love’, Lo sings about the end of a fresh relationship. Moving to a deeper trance vibe with ‘Suburbia’ , ... read more
