I don't know which songs I like better. The hopeful and yearning ones (Oh Yoko!, Imagine) or the brooding and scathing ones (Jealous Guy, Gimme Some Truth, How Do you Sleep?). It is this duality that defines the album.
Wow a major discovery for me. Needs to be discussed and cited more frequently.
On Kanye's FML off of The Life of Pablo he sang, "I been thinking/About my vision/Pour out my feelings
/Revealing the layers to my soul/My soul"
This album feels like that sentiment complete. From moment one, "I Thought About Killing You" to his emotional embrace of fatherhood in the closing track, Kanye is looking inward, confronting his mental illness, suicidal thoughts, and destructive vices. Floored. Album of the year for me. The obsessive quality of the lyrics and music. Any review, positive or negative, that has written this off an Alex Turner solo project is missing how integral the rest of the members are in realizing this album.
"golden boy's in bad shape" and he's crafted a better record for it.
