this was my third time trying to listen to the album. for some reason the rest never clicked for me, but i'd already listened to this modern romance, so here we are, and like eating glass for a while. this time, the rest of it just kinda clicked—but for the most part the other songs feel sort of like backing tracks to a few main events. still, those few and the rest as a whole are so good that listening the whole way through is genuinely consistently enjoyable.
the best of the singles so far: a fun listen and richer than the singular cutesy feeling of coming home
unremarkable and pretty disappointing given how much i liked sunburn: maybe two good songs on here and hi grace being one of them is in spite of it’s gedigadagedao ass part
good moments throughout (brit-brit-brit-brit-brit—like-brit-pop) but it drops off towards the end and pink mask to me is just a reminder that the album could have a few more tender moments
pretty good as an EP but nothing quite as interesting as their later stuff
somehow better than wicked city just by merit of there being more compelling hits like glasgow and concrete over water which are probably two of their best songs. 50/50 is also so so fun
the problem with matt maltese is that he'll make some indisputably moving stuff like curl up and die or (for me at least) when you wash your hair, but then when he's mid he is mid
really good throughout and just fun to listen to, fish song really unexpected banger but slow and actually moving
i really really like the title track, but other than it and the opener i think the rest of the record is pretty forgettable
some really lovely tracks on here, obviously Rivers and Roads, but also Lost in My Mind and Winter Song come to mind. just a bit of soft music to listen to on a slow day.
this album makes me feel like i'm in my grandparents' apartment in Tianjin and the window is open and there are kids in the courtyard outside. the lady on the cover reminds me of my grandmother.
actually a pretty satisfying listen all the way through, some appealing melodies throughout even if at times it feels a little droning there's always enough interesting happening that it keeps you head-bopping
the whole thing kind of is like being underwater with your eyes closed feeling the whole of everything and its parts swirl you about and swirling yourself too. listened to it the first time while going to two funerals back-to-back so it'll probably always make me feel something
